Edgar Wright and Glen Powell's new take on Stephen King's The Running Man is one step closer to becoming a reality. According to a new report from The Wrap, The Running Man is set to begin production in November of this year, after the film was officially greenlit by Paramount Pictures. Wright is set to direct the film, which is based on King's 1982 novel of the same name and will star Powell. This comes after Powell previously hinted to IndieWire that he would be juggling production on The Running Man with returning to finish his degree at the University of Texas, suggesting that filming would commence at some point in the fall.

"I'm not going to be sitting in a class with other students on the regular," Powell revealed. "I'm basically going to be coming back because I have to finish up, but I'm going to be shooting The Running Man in the fall. So I'm going to be in London, but I am going to be going back for proctored exams. So, they're letting me figure it out [with] distance learning. And I'm obviously going to be coming in, Zooming in for classes and whatnot, but I have to be back for the proctored exams. So, we're figuring that out for two or three times a semester, I'll come back for all my stuff. Edgar has been very nice about letting me finish my degree in the middle of his massive movie."

What Is The Running Man Remake About?

The Running Man is set in a dystopian world where contestants can enter to appear on the TV show "The Running Man" where they must elude police and authorities for an extended amount of time. If they're successful they'll take home a huge cash prize, but for a month's time they'll be hunted by men with shoot to kill orders. The story was already loosely adapted into a movie in 1987, directed by Paul Michael Glaser with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the titular role.

"It was so fun for me because I searched "Edgar Wright" in my email the other day, writing "Edgar." We've been going back and forth on script stuff, and it's so fun," Powell said elsewhere in the interview. "The world that Edgar's developed on this thing is just outrageous. It's so good. And really, we're just both such big fans of the Stephen King book, and it's going to be a great character. I'm so fired up about it. But I searched my email, and I searched Edgar Wright in my email, and it came up: I had a wish list of directors that I wanted to work with in 2008 when I moved out to LA that I sent my agent at the time -- and Edgar Wright is literally number one. I'm such an Edgar Wright man. And so, the fact that I get to work with him right now is just so damn cool."

Shang-Chi 2: Simu Liu Wants Marvel Star Back for Sequel https://comicbook.com/movies/news/shang-chi-2-simu-liu-marvel-michelle-yeoh-sequel-return-request/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 23:09:00 +0000 Aaron Perine e1028e97-b672-4858-8c6d-5cda5429aa0a

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu is hoping that one familiar face from the first movie comes back for the upcoming sequel. At Fan Expo Canada, Collider attended a panel discussion with the Marvel star. During that talk, Liu talked about his hope that Michelle Yeoh could return for Shang-Chi 2. Now, we're probably years away from the MCU's return to Ta-Lo, but that's not going to stop one prospective Avenger from putting down that request early. Since Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Yeoh has claimed an Oscar, so that price tag could be steep. At any rate, it will be interesting to see what he's up against the next time he turns up in the MCU.

"When we shared our scenes together, and I had the opportunity to fight her, it was more of a dance fight. First of all, I was really nervous and, second of all, she's so petite and graceful, and I just felt like a big clumsy chunk of meat just flopping around," Liu joked. "It worked for the scene, right? She's trying to kind of teach me to find harmony with my body, and it's very Tai Chi oriented. So it's very flowy, she's kind of guiding you through, and I'm like stumbling. I didn't have to do a lot to get into character, and she's great. Just the absolute best kind of person to hang out with."

What's Up With Shang-Chi 2?

Shang-Chi 2 is a topic that Simu Liu is going to be asked about all the time until the project is formally announced. A previous stop on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon saw the Marvel actor having to address the sequel again. While he's not at liberty to divulge details, Liu would explain that Marvel is hard at work on what they're planning for the master of kung-fu. Clearly, there's something bubbling behind the scenes, but Marvel Studios is not ready to address it just yet.Fans have been theorizing that Shang-Chi 2 could probably fit between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars in the timeline.

"This is where I use all the mental gymnastics that I possibly can to answer this question," Liu told the host. "Well look, I will say this -- it's definitely happening. I should probably lead with that. People, whether it's online or in person, ask me every single day, and tell me every single day how much they enjoyed the first movie, and how much of a moment it was. And I think there's just so much goodwill, and I'm so deeply appreciative of that. So please know, if you've ever sent me a message, if you've ever asked about a sequel, or just approached, or any which way, I take it to heart and I really appreciate it. I really do. And I think I speak for myself and Destin, our returning director, when I say that we're so beyond excited to jump back in. We really are."

Wolf Man: Blumhouse Reboot Reveals First Promo Poster https://comicbook.com/horror/news/wolf-man-first-look-poster-revealed/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 22:47:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt fda82b5a-6634-4cbf-b728-a957549fc8f5

Marketing for Universal's Wolf Man movies is officially underway. Initially set to hit theaters later this year, the film has been bumped to January, allowing Universal ample time to get word out about the flick. The marketing cycle has officially started with a new standing poster at Universal Studios for Halloween Horror Nights.

The poster itself doesn't reveal much, if anything, about the movie. On it is a lone farmhouse with a wraparound porch and the poster is flanked by a small activation packed full of hay bales. See the teaser for yourself below.

At one point, Ryan Gosling was set to star in the feature when Derek Cianfrance was still attached to direct. Gosling and Cianfrance have since been replaced by Christopher Abbott and Leigh Whannel.

"I just would do anything with Derek, but the idea of doing something like that just seems really exciting," Gosling shared with Collider. "It's new for both of us, but in some way, I feel like it's kind of the movie we've made already a few times, but in literal form. We've always kind of made the metaphorical version of it, and it's sort of like the opportunity to really, to just make the literal version of what we've been hacking away at."

Whannel's The Invisible Man reboot ultimately grossed $144.5 million worldwide against a reported production budget of just $7 million on its way to a 92-percent Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Because of the successes of the film, Universal opted to pivot strategies and no longer pursue its Dark Universe, but rather a series of self-contained, standalone movies.

Wolf Man is set to hit theaters on January 17, 2025. The original Universal Monsters flick is now available to rent or buy wherever movies are rented and sold.

Jenna Ortega Reveals She Auditioned for Denis Villeneuve's Dune https://comicbook.com/movies/news/jenna-ortega-auditioned-denis-villeneuve-dune/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 22:38:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 323a224d-04b4-4579-a928-ede04c4845b6

From The Addams Family's spinoff Wednesday to Scream to the forthcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Jenna Ortega has been associated with some pretty significant franchises. As a new BuzzFeed Puppy Interview appearance from the actress reveals, she almost counted a massive science-fiction juggernaut among that list. Ortega shared that she auditioned for a role in Denis Villeneuve's live-action Dune movies. While it isn't clear the exact role she was in contention for, she hints that it was for the role of Chani, a part that ultimately went to Zendaya.

"I auditioned for Dune when I was about fifteen," "I remember just being a big fan of that film and the franchise and everything like that, and being really excited for that interview, because Denis is one of my favorite filmmakers. I think it was Chani. I think it was Zendaya's... but they weren't saying that. Everything was very secret."

Will There Be a Dune 3?

Following the release of this year's Dune: Part Two, fans have been curious to see if and how the franchise will continue on the big screen. Villeneuve has teased that a script for the third film, Dune: Messiah, exists, and that he is focusing on telling the best possible distillation of the source material. Fans have speculated that Dune: Messiah will be released on December 18, 2026, which is currently held by Warner Bros. for an unknown movie's release date.

"I'm working on four different screenplays -- I know that Dune: Messiah will be one of them, I don't know if it will be the next or the second next," Villeneuve shared in an interview earlier this year. "My job was to try to keep the spirit of Frank Herbert alive as much as possible -- the whole meaning of Dune becomes clear with Dune: Messiah."

What Is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice About?

In Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the Deetz family returns home to Winter River after Charles Deetz's unexpected death. Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened, releasing Betelgeuse.

Directed by Tim Burton, the cast of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice includes Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be released exclusively in theaters on Friday, September 6th.

Original The Crow Director Alex Proyas Trolls "Cynical Cash-Grab" Reboot https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-crow-1994-director-alex-proyas-reboot-box-office-reviews-reaction/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 22:10:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 9c1fabd4-fbbb-4b49-83d2-df1d1a6336d4

The Crow (2024) tried to be a reboot that sparked renewed interest in the franchise - but after abysmal reviews and one of the worst box office openings of the year ($4.6 million on a $50 million budget), it's pretty clear that's not going to be the case. Now that The Crow has crashed and burned, it seems that there's no shortage of people looking to kick the franchise while it is down bad - and that list includes the director of The Crow (1994), Alex Proyas, who is once again serving as a one-man trolling campaign against the reboot.

In his latest social media posts, Proyas shared this mega-troll message with fans: "I thought the remake was a cynical cash-grab. Not much cash to grab it seems."

the-crow-1994-director-alex-proyas-trolls-reboot-opening-box-office-failure.jpg
(Photo: Miramax Films)

Besides sharing his snarky opinions, Proyas spent the opening weekend of The Crow's (2024) release sharing negative fan reactions, review videos, and posts criticizing the reboot while simultaneously celebrating Proyas' original film. One story that resonated with a lot of fans involved a Facebook post in which a fan talked about meeting another fan with an epic Crow movie arm tattoo and learning that same fan's father used to help balance his ADHD as a young man by putting on The Crow (1994), which would settle him down. That fan's father passed away, and the tattoo stands as a testament to their connection - as well as the legacy of original Crow star Brandon Lee, who lost his life while filming the movie.

The point that Alex Proyas has been trying to convey over and over again is that his version of The Crow is more than just a movie: it's an indelible marker of Brandon Lee's legacy; a milestone marker of Generation X's Gothic influences, and one of the earliest examples of how a low-budget genre film (like a comic book adaptation) could become a major franchise IP. It's that latter point that Alex Proyas has always had a problem with - as he made clear when the first trailers for The Crow reboot were released:

"I really don't get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmaker's work. And I'm certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film," Proyas shared on his Facebook page while sharing an article about the film's first trailer getting a "staggering" amount of dislikes on YouTube. "So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan's response speaks volumes. The Crow is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That's how it should remain."

The Crow (2024) is now playing in theaters. The 1994 original is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Nobody 2 Director Shares First Set Photos From Sequel https://comicbook.com/movies/news/nobody-2-filming-star-first-look-unveiled/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 21:39:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt e3b2547d-ab67-4f2c-bfed-492c48ac531f

Filming on the highly-anticipated Nobody 2 has finally started, with filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto sharing the first look at the upcoming sequel. Monday, Tjahjanto took to X--the social network formerly known as Twitter--to share the first behind-the-scenes looks at the picture.

In one of the snapshots, he's seen posing with franchise producer David Leitch; in the other, he can be spotted in an elevator with Nobody star Bob Odenkirk. See the first looks for yourself below.

"Even before the first one started shooting, we would riff on it," Nobody writer Derek Kolstad previously told Empire Magazine of a sequel. "Like, 'Where can we go? What can we do?' It's a joy because I really do believe that the best idea wins, and when you are imagining when you're 11 years old, hanging out on the playground or wandering about with your buddies, playing video games and you go, 'You know what would be cool? Is if Boba Fett fought so-and-so.' That's where we are with Nobody 2."

"More importantly, everyone encouraged everyone to paint themselves in the corner and then lean on everyone else to find their way out, so that you have something where you're like, 'I don't care if anyone refers to anything I've ever written as a guilty pleasure because those are my favorite fucking movies," he continued.

Nobody was about the "nobody" Hutch (Odenkirk), an overlooked and underestimated father and husband to his wife Becca (Wonder Woman's Connie Nielsen) who took life's indignities on the chin and never rocked the boat. But when his daughter lost her beloved kittycat bracelet -- and after failing to protect his family during a robbery -- Hutch hit a boiling point no one knew he had. Flipping from regular dad to fearless fighter, the "nobody" became a somebody as he took his enemies on a wild ride of explosive revenge.

Christopher Lloyd (the Back to the Future films) and Wu-Tang Clan's RZA (The Man With the Iron Fists) co-starred.

Nobody 2 is set to hit theaters next August while Nobody is now available wherever movies are sold.

M. Night Shyamalan's Sixth Sense and Signs Coming to 4K for the First Time https://comicbook.com/movies/news/m-night-shyamalan-4k-sixth-sense-signs-movies-physical-media/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 21:32:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 0fe94ed6-129b-4818-9d26-6f26a25ecce5

Two M. Night Shyamalan classics are finally getting the 4K treatment this year. Hot on the heels of the release of his latest film, Trap, the beloved filmmaker will see a pair of the most beloved entries in his catalogue receive brand new restorations in High Dynamic Range. On Monday, Disney announced that 4K restorations for Signs and The Sixth Sense were on the way this fall, with a digital on-demand date coming a couple of months before the physical releases.

The new 4K versions of both films are being released on video on-demand (VOD) platforms on August 27th. They'll be able to be purchased individually, in addition to a new collection that also includes the 4K edition of Shyamalan's Unbreakable. The physical 4K editions of The Sixth Sense and Signs will be hitting shelves on October 22nd.

When the physical editions are made available for preorder, Signs can be found here, while The Sixth Sense can be found here.

Both movies were restored in HDR from their original camera negatives, and they include 5.1 Dolby audio tracks. The physical editions include a 4K UHD disc, a Blu-ray, and a digital copy.

One frustrating element, however, is that the initial press release didn't mention any sort of special features for either release. Both will surely have some element of bonus features available, but they aren't known at this time.

The Sixth Sense is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2024, having been released in 1999 and shocking audiences with its big twist that is still talked about today. Signs, another of Shyamalan's biggest hits, was released three years later, in 2002.

New From Shyamalan

Shyamalan's latest film, Trap, operates a bit differently from his other movies. While there are plenty of twists and turns throughout, the reveal of the killer's identity was made in the very first trailer, and you spend the entire movie knowing who it is.

Speaking to ComicBook ahead of the film's theatrical release this summer, Shyamalan opened up about Trap's massive change.

"The the actual interesting and wicked part of the movie is you are him," Shyamalan said of Trap's main character, as the story is told through his perspective. "That was the thing that made me want to do it. We've seen a million stories about serial killers, but to say you are him and this is what life is like for you on the day that you might get caught [is new]."

Fantastic Four's Jessica Alba Offers Advice for Vanessa Kirby Taking on Sue Storm Role https://comicbook.com/movies/news/fantastic-four-reboot-mcu-jessica-alba-vanessa-kirby-sue-storm-invisible-woman-advice/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 21:19:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw c6ab78dd-b19d-481b-9408-db1876e722c9

Marvel's Fantastic Four: First Steps is currently filming in the UK, and now that the Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot of The Fantastic Four is officially a real thing, it's interesting to hear from some of the veterans of the franchise. Actress Jessica Alba starred in The Fantastic Four (2005) and its sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) as Sue Storm, aka The Invisible Woman. In a new interview for her new Roku series Honest Renovations, Alba was kind enough to pass on some advice to actress Vanessa Kirby, who is the new MCU version of Sue Storm.

When asked what Kirby needs to know about stepping into the world of The Fantastic Four (and Marvel fandom), Alba had this to say:

"I think just have fun. The fans are so amazing. It was probably one of the best times of my life, going around the world and meeting all of the people that just love The Fantastic Four and love these comic books and can relate to these stories, Alba shared with Collider. "That, to me, and to be able to meet so many different people that you can touch and bring joy to them, I would say that's first and foremost for anyone who gets the honor of playing one of these awesome characters. So I'd tell her to just have fun and soak in the moments."

(Photo: Paramount & 20th Century Fox)

Tim Story's Fantastic Four movies of the 2000s are now looked at as early pioneers of the blockbuster era of superhero movies, following the release of Wesley Snipes' Blade, X-Men (2000), and the game-changing first Spider-Man (2002) movie. 20th Century Fox was hoping the Fantastic Four would be a strong enough IP to support its own franchise universe, alongside the X-Men films (the only two Marvel movie properties Fox owned). Instead, director Tim Story (Barbershop) never quite achieved the massive breakthrough success of Spider-Man or X-Men with both of his F4 films; the property sat dormant for years as Fox continued building out the X-Men movie universe, and eventually gave it a soft-reboot with X-Men: First Class in 2011. The studio tried to do the same with Fantastic Four, tapping filmmaker Josh Trank (Chronicle) to do a full-fledged reboot (Fant4stic) which crashed and burned, earning just $167 million at the box office on a budget of $120.

Even worse than the loss of profits were the embarrassing stories of the film's production. It has been rumored that Trank and Fox had major conflicts during the making of the film, with conflicting reports indicating that Trank was "erratic" on set, while others claim his original cut of the film was too dark for the Fox executives, leading to an infamous series of reshoots that changed the movie's latter half completely and resulted in a final cut that was a Frankenstein mess of mismatched ideas, tones, and style. The reboot was received so poorly that Fantastic Four has remained dormant in the decade since - despite the global domination of the Marvel Studios brand.

So, while Alba's words to Kirby are nice, her experience doing the film (which wasn't without its own casting controversy) and meeting the fans was probably a lot different than the ugly legacy Vanessa Kirby and co. have to now overcome.

Fantastic Four: First Steps has a release date of July 25, 2025.

Former The Punisher Actor Addresses Whether a Deadpool & Wolverine Cameo Was Considered https://comicbook.com/movies/news/former-the-punisher-actor-deadpool-wolverine-cameo-considered-thomas-jane/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 20:45:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson dd091153-baed-4d75-8937-12bc843c013e

Deadpool & Wolverine has easily been one of the biggest movies of this year, grossing over $1 billion at the worldwide box office and renewing a lot of hype in the Marvel Cinematic Universe along the way. In addition to continuing the madcap journey of Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson / Deadpool, the film folded in characters from a number of previous Marvel movies and television shows -- but now we know one that was not in the running. Thomas Jane, who previously portrayed Frank Castle / The Punisher in 2004's The Punisher, recently confirmed he was not approached for a Deadpool & Wolverine cameo in a new interview with The Direct.

"Nope," Jane revealed, before adding, "I like [Jon] Bernthal's Punisher. I think, you know, for me, it was always a little bit of a stretch. Frank Castle is supposed to be an Italian American. I'm not. I'm an Irish American. So for me, I had to dye the hair and sort of take on a persona, but Bernthal wears it so well, so I think they should stick with him."

Who Cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine?

Among the many Marvel cameos of Deadpool & Wolverine, the biggest standouts were Wesley Snipes as Blade, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, and Dafne Keen as X-23, as well as Channing Tatum as Gambit from his never-produced Gambit solo movie. As director Shawn Levy revealed shortly after the film debuted in theaters, the biggest priority when choosing these cameos was playing off of the legacy of the larger Marvel universe.

"The vibe on set was a party. We wanted to play with this theme of 'legacy.' So, we started thinking of characters we knew who never quite got their ending," Levy revealed. "When we had all these characters together and you have X-23, and you have Blade, and you have Gambit and Electra. Everyone was so happy and grateful."

What Is Deadpool & Wolverine About?

In Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) will change the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). The film also stars Matthew Macfadyen as Paradox, and Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, with the return of Deadpool alums Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Stefan Kapi?i? as Piotr Rasputin/Colossus, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Rob Delaney as Peter, and Lewis Tan as Shatterstar, and Aaron Stanford returning as Pyro from the X-Men film series.

Kevin Feige, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy and Lauren Shuler Donner produce with Louis D'Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey and Simon Kinberg serving as executive producers. Deadpool & Wolverine is written by Ryan Reynolds & Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Zeb Wells & Shawn Levy. Deadpool & Wolverine was released exclusively in theaters on July 26th.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Announces First Trailer Release Date https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/sonic-the-hedgehog-3-first-trailer-release-date-shadow/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 19:01:00 +0000 Marc Deschamps 59c7e2f9-e9c7-416d-bccb-64ceb2243b5f

After rumors began to circulate over the last few days, it has been confirmed that the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be released on Tuesday, August 26th. Paramount made the announcement today via a series of images shared to the official Sonic Twitter account. These images feature images of Sega characters projected on buildings around the world, in locations like Dallas, Tokyo, Frankfurt, and New York City. Sonic and Doctor Robotnik both feature prominently, as does Shadow the Hedgehog. Fans have been wondering for months now when the trailer would be released, and it looks like the hype cycle is about to begin!

An image of Shadow's face projected in New York City can be found below.

shadow-in-new-york.jpg
(Photo: Paramount, Sega)

We've long known that Shadow will have a major role to play in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and these teasers show how the character will be used in the film's promotion. Knuckles got the big push last time around, and it looks like Shadow is going to be all over the place this time! While Paramount has just begun to build hype for the new movie, Sega started things off several months ago, when it proclaimed 2024 the "Year of Shadow." Sega has spent the last few months building up the character in various ways, from a tour featuring a replica of Shadow's motorcycle, to a new LEGO set. There's even Sonic x Shadow Generations, a new video game coming out for multiple platforms on October 25th.

The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie was released back in 2020, and the series has become a major success story for Paramount ever since. The first two movies have raked in more than $720 million combined at the global box office. That would be impressive enough on its own, but this year also saw the Sonic Cinematic Universe expanded with a live-action Knuckles series. That show set new streaming records for Paramount+, and gave audiences a chance to learn more about how things have progressed since the previous movie. It remains to be seen whether Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be able to continue this string of successes, but we'll have a better idea when the first trailer drops!

Tron: Ares star Jared Leto is doing his own kind of viral marketing and promotion for the film, by making a public display of riding the Tron Lightcycle ride at Walt Disney World. Leto posted an entire video to his Instagram showing him taking an evening walk through Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and arriving at the Tron Lightcyle ride attraction. After exclaiming "We gotta go, we gotta do this, holy sh*t! I feel like I'm home!" the video shows Leto, hair flowing, feeding his 'need for speed' while riding the high-speed coaster.

Leto recently wrapped filming on Tron 3 - so he has all the reason in the world to celebrate, right now.

What Is Tron Lightcylce?

Read Below for Disney's official description and background on the Tron Lightcycle ride attraction at Walt Disney World:

In 1982, Disney made filmmaking history with TRON, the first production of its kind to mix live action with computer-generated visuals and backlit animation. This iconic film went on to inspire video games, comic books, an animated series and the 2010 sequel TRON: Legacy-as well as this Disney theme park attraction.

Leave the real world behind and join Team Blue in a quest across the Grid-the dark, computerized world with no horizons from TRON. Here, there's no limit to the excitement.

Climb aboard your very own Lightcycle and take off on a high-speed adventure, racing against the Grid's most menacing Programs. Surge past your fierce opponents as you attempt to cross through 8 Energy Gates and secure your team's victory.

TRON Lightcycle / Run is one of the fastest coasters at any Disney theme park in the world.

What Is Tron: Ares About?

Joachim R?nning (Kon-Tiki, Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales), who took over directing duties from Legacy's Joseph Kosinski, said in a statement that TRON 3 "builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling" established by the ground-breaking original film 40 years ago.

TRON: Ares stars Jared Leto (Suicide Squad), Greta Lee (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse), Evan Peters (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Hasan Minhaj (Haunted Mansion), Jodie Turner-Smith (Star Wars: The Acolyte), Arturo Castro (Narcos), Cameron Monaghan (Gotham), and Gillian Anderson (The X-Files). Sean Bailey (TRON: Legacy), Jeffrey Silver (The Little Mermaid), Justin Springer (Oblivion), Emma Ludbrook (Morbius), Leto, and original TRON writer-director Steven Lisberger are the producers, with Russell Allen (Disney's The Lion King and Snow White re-imaginings) on board as executive producer.

Quentin Tarantino Refutes Rumors About Scrapped Film The Movie Critic https://comicbook.com/movies/news/quentin-tarantino-the-movie-critic-cast-rumors-dead-alive/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 15:44:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw b9ac81a9-ed39-4dff-b9fe-52bfed3d1999

Quentin Tarantino is setting the record straight about his supposed final film, The Movie Critic. Tarantino made a return appearance on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast, where the pair talked extensively about Tarantino's long-spanning career, and where it could be headed next. Naturally, the supposed final destination of Tarantino's directorial career will be The Movie Critic, a meta-minded film about a film critic working at a less-than-reputable publication.

Back in April, reports started coming out that The Movie Critic would not be Tarantino's final film. This about-face turn came after months of hearing that The Movie Critic would be casting the likes of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in major roles - and that it could be the Tarantino Universe Avengers, bringing back actors and/or characters from other Tarantino films for surprise appearances.

tarantino-in-from-dusk-til-dawn.jpg
(Photo: Miramax)

However, during the Club Random discussion, Tarantino refuted the idea that anything we've heard reported online is valid in any way:

"If you're Joe Schlomoka, and you're some sort of transient celebrity reporter of some kind, if you hear 'Quentin is going to make a Star Trek movie,' or 'Quentin is going to do a movie called The Movie Critic' or Quentin is going to do any f*cking thing, it's a little bit like when that guy wrote that Howard Hughes biography that ended up being a hoax... The thing is, they can say anything: 'Oh Quentin is going to cast Tom Cruise - it's for sure! Quentin is going to cast Tom Cruise as the movie critic!'

Tarantino did not confirm any of the reports that The Movie Critic is dead; he didn't confirm that any of the reported progress on the film (including casting) was valid, either. In fact, Tarantino went so far as to say one of the casting rumors was more of a statement about fan psychology, than an actual scoop:

"The thing that's kind of funny about The Movie Critic was they started saying I was going to cast that actor, Paul Walter Hauser... But what's funny about it is I think they just think he looks like a critic, so that's why they picked [him]," Tarantino explained with a laugh. "But my point being, though, is they write it in, you know, 'Showbiz Daily' or something, and then that gets picked up in 140 [other] pieces."

Indeed, that's a fair assessment of how modern entertainment "journalism" (read: blogs and influencers) works. Even our own ComicBook archives are filled with the same reports about The Movie Critic that Tarantino is mocking. The filmmaker was willing to concede that the rumor mill would probably stop churning if he ever decided to address the misinformation - but he won't:

"Because I'm not shutting that down - because I'm not all connected - then that's just reported as if it's true: and it is true for a couple of weeks, because no one knows anything better, because I'm not filling them in.

That all said, Tarantino sees Internet rumors (true or not) to be a helpful promotional tool (at best), and/or a great way to keep a celebrity's ego inflated:

"It's not a bad thing! Actually, the egomaniac in me thinks that the idea that 142 articles can be printed about just speculation of what I'm going to do, I appreciate that a lot, and that means I'm in a good place. The egomaniac Elvis guy part of me goes 'Yeah, right on!'"

At this point, the true status of Quentin Tarantino's The Movie Critic is still unknown.

Super/Man: Christopher Reeve Documentary Gets First Trailer https://comicbook.com/movies/news/super-man-the-christopher-reeve-story-trailer-superman-documentary/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 14:54:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 6c163522-07cb-43f1-8108-c69327c89b43

To quote Lois Lane: "What a super man." Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story -- a new documentary about the real-life man behind the Man of Steel in 1978's Superman: The Movie and its sequels -- chronicles the life and career of actor and activist Christopher Reeve, who was paralyzed from the neck down following an equestrian accident in 1995. The feature-length film, which premiered to critical acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, will screen only in theaters September 21st and again on Reeve's birthday, Sept. 25th, with an international rollout slated for later this year.

In the just-released trailer below, Reeve's children -- ABC News correspondent Will Reeve, Matthew Reeve, and Alexandra Reeve Givens, who serve on the Board of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation -- reflect on their father's legacy and his life after the accident.

The documentary is directed by BAFTA Award-nominated filmmakers Ian Bonh?te and Peter Ettedgui (McQueen) and includes never-before-seen intimate home movies and an extraordinary trove of personal archive material, as well as the first extended interviews ever filmed with Reeve's three children about their father, and interviews with the A-list Hollywood actors who were Reeve's colleagues and friends, including Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon, and Jeff Daniels.

"With 2024 being the 20-year anniversary of our father's death, that felt like the right time to reintroduce him and his heroic story to the world," Will Reeve said at Sundance. "And as we met the folks at Passion Pictures and Misfits Entertainment, and Ian and Peter and our friends at Words + Pictures, we knew we had the right team. Everything came together in a way that we knew as a family we could be open and honest and vulnerable and hand everything over to them and see what they came back with. And that trust has been rewarded in a way that we're just so thrilled about and can't wait for the world to experience as well."

Added Reeve Givens, "There are so many different parts of his personality and his passions that come through in the film. He was dedicated to his craft, of course, before the accident, but also after being able to return to acting and directing and showing that a disability wouldn't hold him back. So that legacy of what it is to care about your career and keep moving even after overwhelming obstacles is one key part of it. But the other part is his life as an advocate. He was an activist again before the injury. And then after the injury, of course, he became known around the world for his advocacy, for medical research and for disability rights."

(Photo: DC Studios)

Described as "a moving and vivid cinematic retelling of Reeve's remarkable story," Super/Man hails from Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios, HBO Documentary Films, CNN Films, Words + Pictures, Passion Pictures, Misfits Entertainment, and Fathom Events.

"The story of Christopher Reeve is an astonishing rise from unknown actor to iconic movie star, and his definitive portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman set the benchmark for the superhero cinematic universes that dominate cinema today. Reeve portrayed the Man of Steel in four Superman films and played dozens of other roles that displayed his talent and range as an actor, before being injured in a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down," the synopsis reads. "After becoming a quadriplegic, he became a charismatic leader and activist in the quest to find a cure for spinal cord injuries, as well as a passionate advocate for disability rights and care - all while continuing his career in cinema in front of and behind the camera and dedicating himself to his beloved family."

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is in U.S. theaters on Sept. 21st and Sept. 25th. Tickets are now on sale via the Fathom Events website.

Watch the Twisters Cast React to David Corenswet Being Announced as Superman https://comicbook.com/movies/news/twisters-cast-david-corenswet-superman-announcement-reaction-video/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 14:29:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 158b9a22-c610-4418-b427-690295f546a8

The Twisters cast threw a celebration when they found out their co-star David Corenswet will be playing Superman on the big screen. Twisters was an instant hit at the box office, even surpassing its 1996 predecessor, Twister. One of the movie's stars, David Corenswet, made news earlier this year when DC Studios and James Gunn announced him as the next actor to suit up as the Man of Steel in next year's Superman. While fans were excited to finally have their Superman, this excitement was also shared by the cast and crew of Twisters.

Twisters star Brandon Perea shared some behind-the-scenes videos from the set on social media, with one of the videos featuring the cast's reaction to David Corenswet's Superman announcement. Glen Powell and Sasha Lane are just some of the people you can see jumping up and down and screaming. "Brandon, congrats!! That's our Superman, baby!!" Perea screams. You can tell everyone involved in Twisters is happy for Corenswet, since Superman is one of the more coveted roles in Hollywood, especially with the relaunch of the DC Universe under filmmaker James Gunn. You can watch the video below in the fifth slide of Perea's post.

Superman wraps filming

The end of July came the confirmation that James Gunn's Superman had wrapped filming. The film is the inaugural film entry in Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios and stars David Corenswet in the titular role of Clark Kent / Superman. Corenswet also commemorated the end of production with a post on social media.

The video consists solely of him looking at the character and eating a piece of chocolate cake, seemingly as a celebration of him not needing to maintain his superhero physique in the immediate future.

What is Superman about?

Per DC Studios, Superman tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and a better tomorrow, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Superman will also star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

What is Twisters about?

Twisters follows Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better. As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler, and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung (Minari), Twisters also stars Brandon Perea (Nope), Sasha Lane (American Honey), Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders), Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Nik Dodani (Atypical), David Corenswet (Superman), Katy O'Brian (Love Lies Bleeding), and Golden Globe winner Maura Tierney (Beautiful Boy).

Twisters is now playing in theaters and will return to 4DX on August 30th.

Laurence Fishburne Reveals Which Film He's Most Proud Of https://comicbook.com/movies/news/laurence-fishburne-film-most-proud-of/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 13:29:00 +0000 Timothy Adams aa9701a0-a9f2-42f1-a56d-266b1d7dfe61

Slingshot star Laurence Fishburne is taking a look back at his extensive movie resume to call out the films he's the most proud of. Pop culture is filled with movies starring Fishburne, from the original Matrix trilogy to Man of Steel and the John Wick franchise, but his next role comes as an astronaut in the psychological space thriller Slingshot. When your filmography is that wide, it can be hard to narrow down the projects that really resonate with you. However, Fishburne was recently up to the task, and the movies he's proud of may surprise you.

ComicBook spoke to Laurence Fishburne ahead of the theatrical release of Slingshot, where we asked him to name the performance he's most proud of that might have flown under the radar, and that he'd like audiences to go back and revisit if they missed it. You can find an exert from the interview in the player above.

"There's a thing I did for HBO called Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned, which was based on a Walter Mosely novella of the same title," Fishburned revealed. "There's another little gem of a movie that I did, that I'm not sure many people saw. I also did another movie for HBO called Miss Evers' Boys, which was about the U.S. government's secret experiments on African American men back in the '30s about dealing with syphyllus and penicilin."

He added, "We were fortunate enough to be singled out by President [Bill] Clinton, who was the President at the time. The U.S. government actually made a formal apology to the victims of that experiment."

What is Slingshot about?

A psychological thriller starring Casey Affleck and Laurence Fishburne, Slingshot follows an elite trio of astronauts aboard a years-long, possibly compromised mission to Saturn's moon Titan. As the team gears up for a highly dangerous slingshot maneuver that will either catapult them to Titan or into deep space, it becomes increasingly difficult for one astronaut to maintain his grip on reality.

Directed by Mikael H?fstr?m, Slingshot stars Casey Affleck, Laurence Fishburne, Emily Beecham, Tomer Capon, and David Morrissey. The movie opens in theaters on August 30th.

A Scene From Aliens Inspired the Story for Romulus

Alien: Romulus is being billed as more of a spinoff rather than a direct continuation of the Alien franchise and will see a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. Director Fede ?lvarez has previously opened up about how a deleted scene from James Cameron's Aliens featuring young colonists inspired Romulus' story.

"My first instinct, just to try something different that hasn't been seen before, was to approach it form the angle of characters who are not professionals or scientists; they're not even adults," he said. "I liked this concept of putting people in the front seat of the story who are closer to what the audience is -- not that the audience is young, more that the audience is completely virgin to the realities of space. When the characters are professionals, they know more than you do. But when they're still in their early 20s, they don't know how to operate the f-cking airlock."

He continued, "All their parents probably worked on the same ship when they were kids, and that's how they got to know each other ... There's a lot of history between them because they're the only family they have. They truly act more like surrogate siblings; some of them even lived under the same roof. A lot of the big themes of the movie are about siblinghood and what does that mean? The Romulus of it all, and the bigger plot with Weyland-Yutani, is actually connected to that as well."

Alien: Romulus stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie's Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), Aileen Wu. Fede ?lvarez (Evil Dead, Don't Breathe) directs from a screenplay he wrote with frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues (Don't Breathe 2) based on characters created by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett.

Alien: Romulus is now playing in theaters.

Quentin Tarantino Says His Star Trek Movie Is "Never Going to Happen" https://comicbook.com/movies/news/quentin-tarantino-star-trek-movie-never-happening/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 04:32:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt d3e1f82c-7461-43db-b60b-2e8d8c7d3dd9

At one point, it was widely reported Quentin Tarantino was going to helm a film in the Star Trek franchise, surprising longtime fans of the auteur. After all, the director has long said he's going to retire from filmmaking once he makes 10 movies, a sum he'll reach with the release of his next picture. Because of that, Tarantino says, his Star Trek movie is never going to happen.

"It's never going to happen. There's been so much misinformation about what it was going to be--nothing but misinformation. I live in a special zone and part of my zone is because I'm not on Instagram and Facebook, I'm not creating this constant dialogue with the world with what's going on with my life," Tarantino explained on the latest episode of Bill Maher's podcast. "Consequently, if you're Joe Schlomoka and you're some transient reporter of some kind, if you hear Quentin is going to make a Star Trek movie or a make a movie called The Movie Critic, or any f--king thing, it's a little bit like that guy who wrote the Howard Hughes biography that ended up being a hoax. The thing is, they can say anything. My point being though, they write it in a show biz magazine and then that gets picked up in 140 pieces because I'm not shutting that down because I'm not connected."

Interestingly enough, screenwriter Mark L. Smith has said he penned a script based on a story idea by Tarantino, suggesting he was, at least at one point, attached to a Star Trek project.

"Quentin and I went back and forth; he was gonna do some stuff on it, and then he started worrying about the number, his kind of unofficial number of films," Smith told Collider last year. "I remember we were talking, and he goes, 'If I can just wrap my head around the idea that Star Trek could be my last movie, the last thing I ever do. Is this how I want to end it?' And I think that was the bump he could never get across, so the script is still sitting there on his desk."

Smith continued, "I know he said a lot of nice things about it. I would love for it to happen. It's just one of those things that I can't ever see happening. But it would be the greatest 'Star Trek' film, not for my writing, but just for what Tarantino was gonna do with it. It was just a balls-out kind of thing."

Haunting of Hill House Creator "Would Absolutely Love" to Be Part of James Gunn's DCU https://comicbook.com/movies/news/haunting-hill-house-mike-flanagan-wnats-join-dc-universe-james-gunn/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 00:00:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt e3562322-44e9-4f31-8a30-c31aa2a94189

Mike Flanagan has spent much of his career directing horror pictures, but the filmmaker appears to hoping for a change of pace. At an appearance at FanEXPO Canada on Saturday, Flanagan said he's a fan of DC Studios boss James Gunn on both a personal and professional level, saying he'd love to join Gunn's new DC Universe at some point in his career.

"I've always been a huge fan of James Gunn as a person and filmmaker, and that is a universe I would absolutely love to be apart of," Flanagan said during his spotlight panel.

Before he joins the DC Universe, however, Flanagan will be tackling a new remake of The Exorcist.

"The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe," Flanagan said in a statement earlier this year. "Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I've made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting."

What is on the DC Universe slate?

As Gunn and Safran have revealed, the initial DC Studios slate for "Gods and Monsters" will include movies for Superman, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, and The Authority. It will include the HBO Max television shows Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and an animated Creature Commandos series.

"We're honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we've loved since we were children," Gunn and Safran said in a statement when their roles were first announced. "We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent. We're excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told."

The DC Universe officially kicks off with Creature Commandos, which will see release this December, and Superman, which enters theaters July 11, 2025.

The ComicBook Nation crew previews the Fall TV and Movie schedules and share their hype levels for some of the most highly anticipated releases! There's also a review and discussion of The Crow reboot starring Bill Skarsg?rd!

PLUS: Deep-dive discussion about the status of Star Wars after The Acolyte's cancelation, and a debate about Marvel's Blade reboot and what kind of film it should be.

The Crow Reboot Review

This is what ComicBook Nation host Kofi Outlaw had to say in his 2-star review of The Crow:

Under the direction of Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) and the genuine effort made by stars Bill Skarsg?rd and FKA Twigs, The Crow isn't a total failure - but it is a messy mismatch of high-art aspirations and bloody, brutal, B-movie action-horror. It's both vibrantly alive with creative spark and passion - and a listless, muddled attempt at telling a cinematic story.

...It's not impossible that, despite its flaws, The Crow will follow the path of the original and grow into a cult hit in years to come. If nothing else, it's one of the biggest showcases yet of Bill Skarsg?rd's potential as a leading man (and not just the lineup of odd creatures and/or creeps he's played). But, after more than a decade of trying to get this reboot off the ground - and all the creative talent that's been attached to it along the way - it's almost amusing that middling effort is the end result.

Marvel and Transformers One Star Chris Hemsworth Surprises Fans at Ed Sheeran Concert, Plays Drums https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/marvel-and-transformers-one-star-chris-hemsworth-surprises-fans-at-ed-sheeran-concert-plays-drums/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 20:55:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak a93bf001-e8fc-4a6f-a5d0-aaee23d1f0ee

Chris Hemsworth is best known for playing Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and soon the actor will be heard voicing the iconic Optimus Prime in the new animated film, Transformers One. Hemsworth's credits also include Furisoa: A Mad Max Saga, Extraction and Extraction 2, Ghostbusters (2016), Men in Black: International, and much more. He also has a reality docuseries from National Geographic called Limitless with Chris Hemsworth. It was announced earlier this year that the show would be getting a second season on Disney+, and a taping just took him somewhere extra special. This week, a crowd of 70,000 people were attending an Ed Sheeran concert in Romania's National Arena when Hemsworth showed up with a surprise.

Hemsworth made a surprise appearance at Sheeran's show to play drums on the track "Thinking Out Loud." Sheeran took to Instagram yesterday to celebrate the moment. "Got @chrishemsworth to learn drums for my stadium show, find out why on his show #LimitlessWithChrisHemsworth Season 2 coming 2025 to @disneyplus #thorfortheencore #iwasworthy," he captioned the post. You can watch a video from the night below:

What Is Transformers One About?

Set on Cybertron, Transformers One is the untold origin story of a young Optimus Prime and Megatron. Before they transformed into sworn enemies as the leaders of warring robot factions -- the Autobots and Decepticons -- they were brothers-in-arms Orion Pax (Hemsworth) and D-16 (Henry), who changed the fate of their planet forever. While working waste management in the bowels of Cybertron, Orion and D-16 meet workers B-127 (Key), a.k.a. Bumblebee, and Ariel (Scarlett Johansson), a.k.a. Elita-1, before embarking on a dangerous journey to the planet's surface world.

The star-studded voice cast includes Jon Hamm (Mad Men) as Sentinel Prime, Steve Buscemi (Transformers: The Last Knight) in an undisclosed villain role, and Laurence Fisburne (The Matrix) as Alpha Trion -- sworn protector of Vector Sigma, the mega-computer at the heart of Cybertron -- who unlocks the Transformers' full potential, giving the 'bots the ability to transform. The new movie comes from Paramount Animation (The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run), Hasbro Entertainment (Transformers: EarthSpark), and New Republic Pictures (The Tiger's Apprentice).

"We did our take on the origin, which is still staying true to the lore of Transformers," director Josh Cooley told ComicBook of the first-ever CG-animated Transformers movie, adding that Optimus Prime's origin story is "something we've never seen before on screen." "I wouldn't say that this is a direct prequel to anything that's been done with live-action ones," the director added. "But it's definitely its own story as well."

Transformers One opens only in theaters on September 20th.

Deadpool & Wolverine Concept Art Details Samurai Variant https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-concept-art-samurai-variant/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 20:37:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 12c1818d-625c-4002-a152-673d55d402f6 Deadpool & Wolverine still has some serious legs at the box office, and those behind the film are giving fans an inside look at the production of the film. Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has been sharing more behind-the-scenes snapshots with each passing day, and visual development artists have been able to post their unused work on the film. The latest such piece is courtesy of artist David Masson San Gabriel, who was charged with coming up with a look for the Deadpool variant called Roninpool.

"Ended up with a black hat in the movie, you can see this guy slashing away as one of the Deadpool Corps," San Gabriel shared. "I also added the initial sketch at the end for those who are curious about the process:) Costume designer @mayesrubeo ?? Also does anyone know who played him?"

San Gabriel was also the artist behind Punkpool, a punk rock-inspired variant that didn't make it into the final cut.

"Another variant that didn't make it, Punkpool! Next i will be posting the ones that made it into the movie," San Gabriel shared on Instagram alongside the concept art. In it, Deadpool can be seen with a mohawk, plaid pants, and enough studded clothing to make The Misfits blush. See the concept art for yourself below.

Superman: James Gunn Shares Photo of Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-skyler-gisondo-jimmy-olsen-photo-james-gunn/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 20:15:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo d8e6573a-e000-4d0e-b7e2-5f6c98149e2c

Meet Superman's pal, Jimmy Olsen. 86 years after the character's first appearance, James Gunn -- who wrote and directed the just-wrapped Superman reboot for DC Studios -- commemorated the anniversary with the first official look at actor Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as the freckle-faced Daily Planet photographer who pals around with Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

"Happy Anniversary to Superman's pal, Jimmy Olsen, who debuted on this day in 1941 (although he did appear earlier as 'office boy' in Action Comics 6)," Gunn wrote on X with an on-set photo of Gisondo giving the thumbs up. "Created by Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, and Bob Maxwell. I can't wait for you to see @skylergisondo's portrayal in Superman on July 11, 2025." See the just-released photo and Gunn's social media post below.

superman-2025-skyler-gisondo-jimmy-olsen.jpg

While the unnamed, bow tie-clad office boy who appeared in the pages of 1938's Action Comics #6 would later be identified as Jimmy, DC Comics recognizes Superman #13 -- published in August 1941 -- as Jimmy Olsen's official first appearance. By issue #15, the office boy and aspiring Daily Planet reporter took his surname from the Jackie Kelk-voiced Jimmy Olsen on The Adventures of Superman radio serial.

The first film in the new DC Universe "tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned," according to the synopsis.

Superman stars David Corenswet (Twisters) in the title role opposite Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane, Wendell Pierce (The Wire) as editor-in-chief Perry White, and Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) as Metropolis industrialist Lex Luthor. The ensemble includes Beck Bennett (Saturday Night Live) and Mikaela Hoover (Guardians of the Galaxy) as Jimmy's Daily Planet colleagues Steve Lombard and Cat Grant, Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a (Deadly Class) as The Engineer of The Authority, Frank Grillo (Creature Commandos) as Rick Flagg Sr., and Edi Gathegi (For All Mankind) as Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced (Alien: Romulus) as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho, and Nathan Fillion (The Suicide Squad) as the Guy Gardner Green Lantern.

Gisondo, who previously appeared as Gwen Stacy's younger brother in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man and 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is the latest actor to play Superman's sidekick.

On television, Jack Larson starred opposite George Reeves' Man of Steel on Adventures of Superman, Aaron Ashmore on Smallville, Mehcad Brooks on Supergirl, and David Kaufman on Superman: The Animated Series. Marc McClure appeared as Jimmy in all four Christopher Reeve-starring Superman movies between 1978 and 1987; most recently, Jimmy was played by Sam Huntington in 2006's Superman Returns and by Michael Cassidy in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

DC Studios' Superman soars into theaters July 11th, 2025.

Inside Out 2 Just Broke a Huge International Box Office Record https://comicbook.com/movies/news/inside-out-2-just-broke-a-huge-international-box-office-record/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 19:01:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 9c6e5d1f-4e64-47cc-8d56-16c6ef5e9bbd

While everyone is currently talking about the box office success of Deadpool & Wolverine, the Marvel movie has a long way to go to become the highest-grossing movie of 2024. Currently, that title belongs to Inside Out 2, which has been dominating the box office ever since it was released in mid-June. It took no time for the film to become the highest-grossing animated movie ever made in addition to cracking the top ten box office earners of all time. This weekend, the Pixar movie reached another milestone by becoming the first-ever animated movie to cross $1 billion overseas.

According to Deadline, Inside Out 2 just reached $1.003 billion at the international box office, bringing its worldwide total to $1.649 billion. In the history of theatrical releases, 55 movies have surpassed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, but only 12 have managed to do so internationally. Over the years, there has been debate if The Lion King (2019) counts as live-action, but since Walt Disney Studios does not consider the film to be animated, its $1.1 billion takeaway overseas does not count as a win for animation.

Thanks to Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine, Disney has earned over $3 billion at the box office this year.

Will Inside Out 3 Happen?

Inside Out 2 cruises to 2024's best opening day.

Pixar executive Pete Docter recently told Fandango that they're "thinking of ideas" for a third Inside Out film.

"We're in the same place we were after [Inside Out]," Docter said. "We're just like, 'Okay, well if we were going to do something, what would it be?' And we're kind of just thinking of ideas. Who knows?"

He went on to explain that ideas from both Inside Out and Inside Out 2 could make their way into a potential Inside Out 3. He explained that when he directed the first installment, he thought there was a big world to work with that we only saw a portion of.

"I would love for it to feel as though out of this vast world we only saw like three percent and the rest of it is still out there," Docter said. "So, there's a lot to explore, a lot of things that we played with in the first movie or the second movie that didn't work for story reasons -- [they] didn't fit thematically -- so we have a lot to play with."

Stay tuned for more box office updates.

Deadpool & Wolverine: Ryan Reynolds Pays Tribute To Costume Department by Sharing New Set Photos https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/deadpool-wolverine-ryan-reynolds-pays-tribute-to-costume-department-by-sharing-new-set-photos/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 17:16:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak e1a078a6-1fe6-4918-a5e7-e755168838d0

Deadpool & Wolverine continues to have an epic run at the box office by retaking the number one spot over this weekend's newest releases. In addition to becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, the movie is also up on Rotten Tomatoes with a 78% critics score and 95% audience score. In honor of the film's success, Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) has been taking to social media to share his thanks and praise to the various people who made the film possible. In the actor's latest post, he gave a much-deserved shoutout to the movie's costume department.

"The costume department on #DeadpoolAndWolverine was second to none," Reynolds began. "I can't think of a more stressful line of work on a film like this. SO. MANY. COSTUMES. And prototypes. And no room for error. The work they do isn't just design and fabrication, it's engineering. These suits function as beautifully as they look. Sure it takes over an hour to pee, but the suit has saved me from more injuries than I can count. This whole supersuit journey started and continues with Russ Shinkle and his team at @film_illusions."

"Huge thanks to tireless geniuses: Graham Churchyard, Mayes Rubio and Billy Lawless. Massive appreciation and awe to Ivo Coveny for making a NicePool suit (and many others, including 2099!!!!) beyond anyone's wildest dreams and expectations," he continued. "And all my love, appreciation and thanks to the giant team behind the scenes at Pinewood and beyond working so hard to create, fix, pivot, change, patch and adjust what must feel like a thousand different supersuits every single day... what a team of heroes. You kept the wheels on the bus." You can view the post, which features behind-the-scenes photos, below:

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Drops First Tease of Keanu Reeves Playing Shadow https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/sonic-the-hedgehog-3-first-tease-keanu-reeves-shadow-sega-paramount/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 17:01:00 +0000 Marc Deschamps 5fb0478b-2ebe-4f32-806b-e85a69ca19c8

Several months ago, an article from The Hollywood Reporter claimed that Keanu Reeves had been cast as Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. That was back in April, but Paramount has yet to confirm if that will happen. While everyone is still waiting on news from the company, the official Sonic the Hedgehog TikTok account just dropped a major tease. The tease comes in the form of a clip from the original Sonic movie, in which Sonic watches Speed, a 1994 film in which Reeves happened to star. In that clip, Sonic praises Keanu as a "national treasure." If you need further proof that something is up, the title of that TikTok happens to be "foreSHADOWing."

The TikTok can be found below.

@sonicmovie

? Sonic the Hedgehog Now on Digital - sonicmovie

The use of that clip would seem to suggest that an official announcement will be made very soon. There have been indications that the trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be dropping any day now, and it would pretty much have to happen if Paramount is sticking to the movie's December 20th release date. Hopefully we'll get a lot more information over the next day or two!

Shadow was teased at the very end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, though the character did not have a speaking role. Fans have spent the last two years wondering who would play the beloved character, and word of Reeves in the role has been met with a lot of excitement. Very little information about Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is known at this time, but the film's story will apparently take a number of cues from Sonic Adventure 2, a 2001 video game released for the Sega Dreamcast. That game featured the first appearance of Shadow, and Sega initially had no plans to bring the character back. However, Shadow's popularity resulted in the character returning in several games, and across various Sonic media.

While Paramount has been quiet about the third Sonic movie, Sega has been building hype over the last few months, with a number of promotions surrounding Shadow. Sonic x Shadow Generations will be released in October, which is a package that includes a remaster of a well-regarded Sonic game alongside a new title featuring Shadow. LEGO also has a new Shadow set on the way, which is a large build of the character's head!

How do you feel about Keanu Reeves potentially playing Shadow? Are you looking forward to the new movie? Share your thoughts with me directly on Twitter at @Marcdachamp, on Bluesky at @Marcdachamp, or on Instagram at @Dachampgaming!

Kevin Costner Has a Promising Update on Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 3 https://comicbook.com/movies/news/kevin-costner-has-a-promising-update-on-horizon-an-american-saga-chapter-3/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 16:10:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 0d27ea8f-8dfe-49ac-b9fb-b98709ca7db6

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 was released in theaters in June, and the film was set to be the first of four parts directed by Kevin Costner, who is also starring in the project. Unfortunately for the Oscar-winner, Chapter 1 had a rough run at the box office with an upsetting grand total of $34 million. The film's underperformance caused Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 to lose its release date. Meanwhile, Chapter 3 went into production in June. The first film also received mixed reviews and is currently up on Rotten Tomatoes with a 49% critics score and 70% audience score. Despite these hurdles, Costner is determined to get these films out there, and he recently gave an update about Chapter 3.

"I love the journey of this thing," Costner told TODAY. "It's been the hardest thing I've ever done, but I love this movie. I love the second one - and the third one's even harder than the first two, and the fourth one completes the story. I made a promise to myself, I'm trying desperately to keep it, and to bring it to people, these kind of giant stories, and I hope that people fall in love with these characters."

"A lot of times, the things that you want to make don't immediately resonate with anyone else," he continued. "It's only after you're done that people begin to understand what it was, and almost, they take ownership themselves, of 'I love this movie. I love these characters. I didn't know where this story was going. It's nice in life to be surprised. The plan is, I've already shot a little bit of the third. And to perhaps shoot them back to back next spring."

Jujutsu Kaisen Announces Season Two Compilation Film https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jujutsu-kaisen-anime-movie-compilation-season-2/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 14:57:00 +0000 Megan Peters b634fbc9-59ab-4130-b7ef-35b2479c0efd

Jujutsu Kaisen is eyeing the future, and it seems the big screen is on the horizon. While the team at MAPPA Studios works on season three, the company is also taking a moment to revisit season two. A new Jujutsu Kaisen movie is in the works, after all, and it will compile the first half of season two into a film.

The announcement went live this weekend as Jujutsu Kaisen held a special festival in Japan. It was there the team confirmed a compilation movie for the Hidden Inventory and Premature Death arcs is being worked on. The compilation movie will be released in 2025, and MAPPA Studios will also release a guidebook in tandem.

jujutsu-kaisen-movie.jpg
(Photo: MAPPA Studios)

For those curious about the logistics of the compilation film, this movies are hardly rare in anime. A number of TV anime series eventually head to theaters thanks to this medium. Compilation films are released to condense anime arcs into digestible bits. From Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba to One Piece, a ton of big-name shonen titles have posted compilation films before, and now Jujutsu Kaisen is joining in on the fun.

For the team at MAPPA, this Jujutsu Kaisen movie isn't the only compilation piece it has on deck. Not long ago, the studio confirmed plans to release a compilation film for Attack on Titan's final two specials. The movie, which is called Attack on Titan: Last Attack, is expected to hit Japan next year. So for now, we will have to see whether these compilation projects are screened stateside.

If you want to watch Jujutsu Kaisen season two as is, the anime is easy to find online. The show is streaming on Hulu as well as Crunchyroll. So for more info on the supernatural series, you can read its official synopsis below:

"For some strange reason, Yuji Itadori, despite his insane athleticism would rather just hang out with the Occult Club. However, her soon finds out that the occult is as real as it gets when his fellow club members are attacked! Meanwhile, the mysterious Megumi Fushiguro is tracking down a special-grade cursed object, and his search leads him to Itadori..."

Pinocchio: Unstrung, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey Spinoff, Unveils First Poster https://comicbook.com/horror/news/pinocchio-unstrung-poster-unveiled-poohniverse/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 05:02:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt ad17fa6c-97f7-497c-823a-b85c96c038f0

The Poohniverse will soon expand. After commercial successes with two films in the Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey franchise, Jagged Edge Productions is exploring other public domain characters to put a horror spin on. That includes an upcoming feature called Pinocchio: Unstrung, a horror-tinged retelling of Carlo Collodi's timeless tale.

Jagged Edge finally released an official movie poster for the feature, which teases a slasher-inspired Pinocchio as he breaks free from his puppet-strings to go on a murderous rampage. See the poster for yourself below.

"The film will embrace practical effects at every opportunity, ranging from the doll itself to the title card of the film," Unstrung helmer Rhys Frake-Waterfield said in a chat with Bloody Disgusting. "Having a budget significantly higher than my last film, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, I'm aiming to make this the definitive Pinocchio horror film and my best movie to date. Exciting cast announcements will follow shortly!"

Jagged Edge producer Scott Chambers told ComicBook earlier this year the hope was to eventually cross all these characters over in an Avengers: Endgame-style horror film eventually.

"We're creating a universe," Chambers shared earlier this March. "So my dream movie, honestly, since I was a kid, I wanted a film where they were all in it: Leatherface, Hellraiser, Chucky. I wanted them all in it. And I was like, 'Well, that's probably never going to happen,' but I can now do this. So that's where things are going with Peter Pan, with Pinocchio, with Bambi, we're going to do this, and they're all going to meet and they're all going to cross over and it's going to be madness."

"That is 100% the goal," he continued. "When you watch these films, these are all intro movies. So Winnie the Pooh, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Bambi, they're what either we've just made or we are working on right now. When you see the movies, look out for easter eggs, they're littered in these movies. These worlds, they're all in the same kind of universe."

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey is streaming on Peacock while the sequel can be seen on Amazon's Prime Video.

Bruce Campbell Has a Hilarious Response to the Deadpool & Wolverine Popcorn Bucket: "Let's Send That One Back" https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/bruce-campbell-has-a-hilarious-response-to-the-deadpool-wolverine-popcorn-bucket-lets-send-that-one-back/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 02:06:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak cbd209eb-1602-4d9a-a5b5-c0807f55979d

This year, novelty popcorn buckets have really started to take off thanks to AMC Theatres' souvenir sandworm bucket for Dune: Part Two. The bucket caused a ton of online reactions and inspired a Saturday Night Live sketch. Now, other movies are trying to top that design. Earlier this year, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teased that the popcorn bucket for Deadpool & Wolverine would be "intentionally crude," and he wasn't wrong. In order to get popcorn from your bucket, you have to reach into a very large hole that's positioned as Wolverine's mouth. At San Diego Comic-Con last month, ComicBook chatted with Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell in promotion of his upcoming series, Hysteria!, and got his reaction to the bucket.

"Why did they do that? ... This is an actual piece of merchandise?" Campbell wondered when shown the Deadpool & Wolverine popcorn bucket. "I don't like it," he added after studying it for a bit. "No. No, because Ryan Reynolds would think it's funny that you're shoving your fist into Hugh Jackman's face. So that's the joke."

"I'm not going to comment on that," Campbell added when ComicBook's Chris Killian said, "Hopefully it's your fist."

"This is wrong, AMC," Campbell hilariously added, matter-of-factly. "Nice try. Nice, try. Let's send that one back."

During the chat, we also asked the star why his Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness character, Pizza Poppa, didn't appear in Deadpool & Wolverine. Unsurprisingly, his answer was pretty hilarious.

"He's not in that timeline. He's in a different timeline," Campbell explained. "Well, here's what I say to Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Get a room. What's with the bromance? We get it. Thank you. Next. Go back to your soccer team, Ryan."

You can watch our interview with Campbell at the top of the page.

Bob Iger "Obsessed" With Finding His Disney Replacements, Successor Short List Revealed https://comicbook.com/irl/news/bob-iger-obsessed-finding-replacement-disney-ceo/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 02:05:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt e1a84dcf-e697-47ba-a149-9e4e2c54415d

Bob Iger is hard at work trying to find his replacement prior to the expiration of his current contract at The Walt Disney Company. In fact, the Disney CEO admitted in a recent interview he's even a bit "obsessed" with finding the right person to lead the company when his contract expires at the end of 2026.

"I think it would be safe to assume that I think about this all the time. I could say that I'm obsessed with it would be probably an understatement and actually, the board and I established when I returned that that would be among our biggest, if not our biggest priority," Iger said during a recent stop on SiriusXM's Let's Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa.

"It's actually something that I'm obviously very focused on, not just because of the past, but because I'd like to retire again and I'd like to leave the company in great hands, and that is my intention," he added. "I'm now confident that not only will we do that, but we'll do so on a timely basis that works for the company and hopefully works for me as well, but yes. It's a huge priority."

Iger's first stint as Disney CEO lasted from 2005 to 2020, where the executive oversaw the acquisitions of Marvel, Pixar, Lucasfilm, and 20th Century Fox. Upon his retirement, he named former Disney Parks head Bob Chapek as his successor, an arrangement that lasted less than a year.

Iger then returned with a new four-year contract with the understanding he and the Disney board would exhaustively vet future candidates in hopes of finding the best Iger replacement possible.

TheWrap reports four internal Disney employees are currently being looked at to become Iger's successor including Disney Parks head Josh D'Amaro, Disney Studios co-heads Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, and ESPN boss Jimmy Pitaro.

"I know this company has asked so much of you during the past three years, and these times certainly remain quite challenging, but as you have heard me say before, I am an optimist, and if I learned one thing from my years at Disney, it is that even in the face of uncertainty--perhaps especially in the face of uncertainty--our employees and Cast Members achieve the impossible," Iger wrote in a memo sent to Disney employees upon his return.

Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista's New Action Comedy Adds Star Wars, Spider-Man Stars https://comicbook.com/movies/news/jason-momoa-and-dave-bautistas-new-action-comedy-adds-star-wars-spider-man-stars/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 00:29:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak cd5cd2b1-e66c-4b35-b9a0-287c7f3fc0da

Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista previously worked together on See and Dune, and the duo has previously said they wanted to make "a Lethal Weapon-type buddy cop movie" together. Momoa appeared on The Late Late Show in 2021, and revealed they were working on putting the whole thing together. Now, the time has finally come! The Wrecking Crew is currently in the works from Amazon MGM Studios and Blue Beetle director ?ngel Manuel Soto with Momoa and Bautista set to star. This week, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that more exciting names have been added to the cast.

In addition to Momoa and Bautista, The Wrecking Crew has added Temuera Morrison (The Book of Boba Fett) and Jacob Batalon (Spider-Man: No Way Home). The cast also includes Frankie Adams (The Expanse), Miyavi (Kong: Skull Island), Stephen Root (Barry), and Claes Bang (The Northman). The script was written by Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project). The film is expected to go into production in New Zealand in October.

The film "follows two half-brothers - one a loose cannon cop (Momoa) and the other a disciplined Navy SEAL (Bautista). After 20-odd years of bad blood, they must work together to unravel the conspiracy behind their father's murder in Hawaii."

According to the report, Morrison is set to play the governor of Hawaii while Batalon is "a street-savvy, foul-mouthed private investigator who knew the brothers' father."

When Will Blue Beetle Return to the DCU?

During an appearance on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast last year, DC Studios head James Gunn referred to Jaime Reyes as the "first hero" in the new DC Universe, teasing that Xolo Maridue?a will reprise his role in future projects.

"I mean the first DCU character for sure is Blue Beetle and the first DCU movie is Superman," Gunn said at the time.

While chatting with ComicBook.com, Soto addressed the confirmation that Maridue?a will return as Blue Beetle.

"It was very reassuring to know that it's not just the character of Blue Beetle, it's Xolo being Blue Beetle," Soto explained. "Which means that what we have learned up to this point about his background and his family are part of Jaime Reyes' character. And that is a beautiful thing to see because it's a vote of confidence that what we did, the impact that it did and how it was shown, Whatever they end up doing in the bigger scheme of the DCU, you can always go back to Blue Beetle to know what are the foundations of Jaime Reyes."

Blair Witch Producer Says Everybody's Been Watching the Wrong Version of the Movie https://comicbook.com/horror/news/blair-witch-producer-says-everybodys-been-watching-the-wrong-version-of-the-movie/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 23:50:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt e090ad97-46ec-4bce-a042-44645dc28b0f

Many would attribute The Blair Witch Project with carving out its own niche in horror filmmaker, effectively launching the modern-day found footage subgenre as we know it. The indie powerhouse is considered one of the genre heavyweights, and has become a bonafide classic over its 25 years in existence. As it turns out, however, we've been watching the wrong version of the movie this entire time. Blair Witch producer Mike Monello recently took to Twitter to share an extensive thread on why the version of the film released both in theaters and on home media isn't the one filmmakers intended to release but rather, the one released due to technological restrictions at the time.

"In 1999, theatrical films didn't originate on video, so there was no codified process for putting them out on video. So they did it like all films back then: They transferred the 35mm negative to video," Monello explained. "Unfortunately, the 35mm negative is NOT the actual camera negative. As a result, the version released for all forms of home video is incorrect. The colors, the motion, the strange rounded corners, it didn't look like a home video, and it didn't look like film."

Now, only certain people will be able to see the film transfer as it was meant to thanks to a new Blu-ray pressing courtesy of the UK-based Second Sight Films. Because it's being released in the UK, there is one caveat: the Blu-ray is region-locked as a Region B release, which means your Blu-ray player will need to be able to play Region B discs.

"This is the FIRST (and for the immediate time being) the ONLY edition of the film to be properly transferred for home video release. It finally looks the way it did to us when we were editing the film. The way we wanted it to look. In fact, if theaters had been able to project video in 1999, then THIS transfer would have played theatrically! The 35mm print was a step we had to take due to the technology of the time," Monello added.

Monello ended the thread by apologizing for the release being limited to Region B, and encouraged fans interested in a region-free version to reach out to Lionsgate and request one.

"I know many will be upset that it is Region B. I WISH it were all-region, but contracts and legal stuff prevent that. That said, THIS edition COULD be released in the US. That decision belongs exclusively to @Lionsgate or @LionsgateHorror," he finished. "If you don't have a region-free player, I suggest you contact @Lionsgate directly and ask them to release this version of the film."

The Blair Witch Project reboot has yet to set a release date. The original found footage classic can be rented or purchased through virtually any video marketplace.

Sabrina Carpenter References Psycho, Halloween Ends, and More in New Music Video https://comicbook.com/movies/news/sabrina-carpenter-references-psycho-halloween-ends-more-new-music-video-taste/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 22:26:00 +0000 Matthew Aguilar 3c2b72ea-3988-489d-bc43-1209159dbd8a

Sabrina Carpenter's highly anticipated album Short n' Sweet is finally here, and to coincide with the launch Carpenter released one of her best music videos yet. The video is for the album's lead track Taste, and features Wednesday star Jenna Ortega in a hilarious and often gory battle that involves shotguns, fences, knives, fire, and more. The video also pays homage to several other beloved properties throughout, and we're here to break down the big references and inspirations, including Death Becomes Her, Kill Bill, and more. Let's start with one of the biggest inspirations for the video, which also turns out to be one of Carpenter's favorite films.

Death Becomes Her

From the opening fight, you can clearly see the video takes big inspiration from the 1992 Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep dark comedy Death Becomes Her. The film had Hawn and Streep attempting to kill each other over a man, but with both women now immortal thanks to a potion, that task proves quite difficult and leads to some unforgettable scenes.

One speck part in the video has Carpenter sitting up in the hospital after being gravely injured, and reveals a gaping hole in her stomach. That's a direct reference to one of the film's most iconic scenes where Hawn says "I have a hole in my stomach", and you can clearly see through to the other side. As for the kiss in the video, that is also tied to a memorable kiss line in the original film.

Ginger Snaps

sabrina-carpenter-ginger-snaps.jpg
(Photo: Island Records)

The reason Carpenter ends up in the hospital is because Ortega throws her out of a second story window, causing Carpenter to be impaled on a white picket fence. After she lands on the fence, Carpenter flips Ortega the bird (pricelessly I might add). That's a direct reference to the 2000 film Ginger Snaps, which features the same type of death, and the bird is flipped in a final act.

Kill Bill

sabrina-carpenter-jenna-ortega-kill-bill.jpg
(Photo: Island Records)

During the hospital scene, Carpenter is supposed to be getting patched up, but she never has a chance to recover, as Ortega is there dressed as a nurse that might look awfully familiar. That's because Ortega has a red-cross eye patch just like Daryl Hannah did in Kill Bill Vol. 1. Ortega would fit right in with that movie, as she picks up a defibrillator and shocks Carpenter with it multiple times. The font used throughout the video seems to homage Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction as well.

The Addams Family Values

sabrina-carpenter-addams-family.jpg
(Photo: Island Records)

Carpenter does eventually recover from the fence, the defibrillator, and being set on fire, and makes her way to the mansion to face Ortega. She does so wearing a white feather boa that seems to be inspired by Joan Cusack's famous villain Debbie Jelinsky in The Addams Family Values. Carpenter's blonde hair also echoes Belinsky's blonde look from the film, and we think Jelinsky would be quite impressed by the lengths Carpenter is willing to go to win this fight.

Psycho

sabrina-carpenter-psycho.jpg
(Photo: Island Records)

When Carpenter makes her way into the house, she also recreates an iconic moment from the horror classic Psycho, opening up the shower curtain and attempting to stab Ortega with a knife. Ortega is prepared though and has s blade of her own, which she promptly uses to cut off Carpenter's arm. The two continue to battle as they make their way downstairs, and despite losing an arm, Carpenter keeps fighting back, though ultimately loses to Ortega.

Halloween Ends

sabrina-carpenter-halloween-ends.jpg
(Photo: Island Records)

In that Psycho-inspired scene, there's another nod to the horror genre, though this one is tied to Halloween Ends. The man the two are fighting over is played by Rohan Campbell, who played Corey Cunningham in Halloween Ends. In this scene he's in the shower with Ortega and screams when she cleaves Carpenter's arm off, causing blood to spatter everywhere.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

sabrina-carpenter-chainsaw.jpg
(Photo: Island Records)

After a prolonged battle between these two, their fight heads by the pool as Ortega takes out a chainsaw. Ortega then stabs Carpenter with the chainsaw and knocks her into the pool. The juxtaposition of the chainsaw and grisly death with the picturesque scenery in the daylight also screams Texas Chainsaw Massacre, though the chainsaw itself kind of makes that clear.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Trailer Rumored to Drop Very Soon https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/sonic-the-hedgehog-3-trailer-release-date-august/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 21:56:00 +0000 Tanner Dedmon 96f7bf0d-be64-42d5-827e-82eebf898251

Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie is scheduled to be in theaters in just a couple of months on December 20th, but so far, we've only gotten just a few teasers for the movie. Some of those came from the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but the Knuckles TV show that aired on Paramount+ didn't really do much to offer any insights into what's coming in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Just one title reveal trailer has been shared thus far (spoiler: it's called Sonic the Hedgehog 3), but according to some new rumors, our Sonic the Hedgehog 3 drought may be coming to an end soon.

That's because, according to these new rumors, a Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer is dropping next week. There's been some talk about whether it would be released in August or September as well as during months prior, but according to insider DanielRPK, the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer will release on August 27th.

Now, before anyone gets too excited about the next Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer and considers this date a surefire thing, it's worth pointing out that leakers and insiders -- including DanielRPK -- have put forward release months for the next trailer in the past with those months come and gone and nothing to show for them already. However, many of those guesses have been tied to broad, monthly releases as opposed to a specific date like this latest rumor, so there could be some more truth behind this date compared to past predictions.

As for what we do know about the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie, we know that it's already wrapped filming as of March. We also know that Shadow the Hedgehog will be a prime focus of the movie just like Knuckles was in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. While Idris Elba plays Knuckles, it's been reported that Shadow the Hedgehog will be played by Keanu Reeves, though we haven't heard anything of the sort from Paramount yet. The next trailer to come out for the movie will presumably feature Shadow more, so perhaps we'll get an answer then.

Sega has already announced plans for even more Shadow the Hedgehog events and celebrations given that this is the "Year of Shadow," so aside from the movie, Shadow fans can expect to see even more of the hedgehog throughout the rest of the year.

Twisters Surpasses Twister at Domestic Box Office https://comicbook.com/movies/news/twisters-surpasses-twister-at-domestic-box-office/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 21:15:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 11b398e6-596a-4d7f-8d23-a2aa1900de78

Twisters was released in theaters last month, and it marked the first follow-up to the classic 1996 disaster film, Twister. The film had a successful opening at the box office. After it was tracking for a $40 Million to $55 million domestic opening, it ended up making $80.5 million. Now, a little over a month after its release, the movie has officially surpassed Twister at the domestic box office. The sort-of sequel has earned $241.7 million in North America while Twister closed out its run in 1996 with $241.6 million. While the numbers are close, Twisters has the chance to beat it even further, especially since it's heading back to 4DX theaters on August 30th.

"During opening week of Twisters, most 4DX showtimes for the movie quickly sold out at Regal locations offering that premium format" James Lamar, Head of Film at Regal, said in a statement. "Despite the packed summer movie calendar, we found an opportunity to schedule seven more days of Twisters in 4DX and introduce a new way to enjoy the original film."

The movies will be available to watch ing 4DX theaters from August 30th through September 5th. Twisters is also now available on VOD.

As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler, and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.

Deadpool & Wolverine is in its fifth weekend in theaters, and it just retook the number one weekend spot. The film has exceeded expectations in every way and recently surpassed Joker to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. The movie was filled with surprising cameos, and Marvel Studios has started posting about the movie's biggest surprises. We've seen many posts dedicated to the heroes in The Void, but the latest promo lets another big name shine: Jon Favreau's Happy Hogan. Favreau has been with the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the beginning, having directed Iron Man (2008) while playing Happy Hogan along the way.

"Get your team together. Get tickets now to see #DeadpoolAndWolverine at the link in bio," Marvel Studios captioned the video. You can check it out below:

"Jon Favreau didn't just jump into #DeadpoolAndWolverine for a quick one night stand as Happy Hogan. He gave us the 360 degree vision of an innovator, foundational Marvel forefather and ace storyteller," Ryan Reynolds previously wrote on Twitter. "And if I have his number right, he is WILDLY uncomfortable with everything I'm writing in this post. But fuck it, I got what I needed out of him so he's gonna drink the medicine."

Alien: Romulus Director Confirms Sneaky Predator Reference https://comicbook.com/horror/news/alien-romulus-director-confirms-sneaky-predator-reference/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 19:05:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 5636b6dd-ad1e-4d52-b5f1-37352550a14e

Alien: Romulus has entered its second weekend in theaters, and the new horror/sci-fi from director Fede ?lvarez is having a successful run at the box office so far. The movie is also up on Rotten Tomatoes with an 80% critics score and 86% audience score, making it the best-reviewed Alien movie in nearly 40 years. ?lvarez has recently teased some hidden Alien easter eggs in the movie, but you'll also find a nod to Predator. Of course, the Alien and Predator films are connected with Alien vs. Predator being released in 2004 and AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem in 2007.

"@fedalvar was the temperature numbers going up on the facehugger containments a nod to this in the predator? Really got the feeling it was," @bYohnk asked ?lvarez on Twitter. "I'm a TAP guy, so everything I do is influenced by Terminator / Alien / Predator," ?lvarez replied. You can view the interaction below:

Will Alien vs. Predator 3 Happen?

Now that the Predator franchise is thriving again in addition to the success of Alien: Romulus, a third crossover installment feels more possible than ever. ?lvarez recently addressed the idea when speaking to Deadline.

"Maybe it's something I have to co-direct with my buddy Dan," ?lvarez suggested, referring to Prey director, Dan Trachtenberg. "Maybe we should do like Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez did with Dusk Till Dawn. I'll direct a half, and he'll direct another half."

It's worth noting that From Dusk Till Dawn was written by Tarantino and directed by Rodriguez. Tarantino also co-starred in the film, but they did not share directing duties. It's possible ?lvarez was referring to Grindhouse, which featured a double bill of Rodriguez's film Planet Terror with Tarantino's Death Proof. In 2005, Tarantino also guest-directed a scene in Rodriguez's film, Sin City.

20th Century Studios presents Alien: Romulus

- 20th Century Studios)

Alien: Romulus is being billed as more of a spinoff rather than a direct continuation of the Alien franchise and will see a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. ?lvarez has previously opened up about how a deleted scene from James Cameron's Aliens featuring young colonists inspired Romulus' story.

Deadpool & Wolverine Box Office Passes MCU Favorite https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-box-office-captain-america-civil-war-mcu-rankings/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 18:14:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 19cc7e56-5b9f-4024-b7db-6e199b4004b6

Deadpool & Wolverine managed to pass off an MCU favorite in the Marvel box office rankings. This week, Shawn Levy's big blockbuster leaped over Captain America: Civil War for the number 8 biggest Marvel movie of all time. Deadpool & Wolverine crossed $1.154 billion which eclipsed the Russo Bros. favorite, which stands at $1.151 billion. In the case of the split between domestic markets and abroad, North American theaters account for $556 million of that massive number and overseas box office handled the rest. As the summer movie season got started, a lot of folks were worried about the state of the industry. With Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and a host of options, things are considerably rosier than when the hottest part of the year kicked off.

Just this week, Marvel's integration of the mutants reclaimed the top spot at the box office. Deadpool & Wolverine is a full-blown feel-good hit. Alien: Romulus is probably going to come-in second. (A development that shows a lot of that bluster about sequels not being an audience priority is a bit misplaced.) Now, the question remains of how far Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's long-awaited team-up movie can go. It's going to be tough to get past Black Panther or Avengers: Age of Ultron, but the possibility definitely exists. And, that wasn't something people could be sure of 12 months ago.

Why Is Deadpool & Wolverine So Good?

These wild box office numbers just prove the point that Deadpool & Wolverine was something this audience truly wanted. Jenna Anderon reviewed this movie for ComicBook. In her review, our critic complimented the thrill ride feel of Deadpool & Wolverine. But, what really makes this movie special is the bond at the center of it. Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds are really best friends and it shines through at every turn.

"Deadpool & Wolverine keeps a thematic core that tackles insecurity, failure, and loneliness at virtually every turn," Anderson argues. "While it takes a few beats for the surprisingly small-scale story to kick into high gear, those emotions certainly fuel our two protagonists, who are charting their own courses toward a future that will hopefully be a little bit kinder to them."

"But those emotions also seem to fuel the entire existence of Deadpool & Wolverine, as the movie argues that the ambition of breaking impossible box-office records and expanding a cinematic universe shouldn't get in the way of telling a story that viewers actually care about," she continues. "Even in a movie that will surely break box-office records, and in a cinematic universe that still continues to grow, it's a sense of honesty that is refreshing."

The Toxic Avenger: Peter Dinklage Has Disappointing Update About Film's Release https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-toxic-avenger-peter-dinklage-has-disappointing-update-about-films-release/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 18:04:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 19d29ba1-3bdd-4b70-99d5-1a1683b30942

Last year, The Toxic Avenger reboot had its festival premiere at Fantastic Fest, and the movie was met with lots of praise. After its debut, the film ended up on Rotten Tomatoes with a 92% critics score after 25 reviews. After years in development, the film finally found its star in Game of Thrones alum, Peter Dinklage. Unfortunately, it's been nearly a year since the movie premiered, and there's still no word on a release date. ComicBook recently had the chance to chat with Dinklage about his new western/thriller, The Thicket. During the interview, Dinklage provided a disappointing update about The Toxic Avenger's release.

"No, I'm not a producer on it. I don't know," Dinklage replied when asked if he knew anything about The Toxic Avenger's release date. "I do want it to get out there into the world because it was a really big hit at Fantastic Fest in Austin, and Macon Blair, the writer/director who is also in The Thicket ... He's incredible. He's one of my favorite people and favorite artists. So hopefully it will have its day in the toxic sun."

You can watch our interview with Dinklage, which also includes his The Thicket co-star, Juliette Lewis, at the top of the page.

What Is The Toxic Avenger About?

The Toxic Avenger

- Legendary Pictures / Entertainment Weekly)

The Toxic Avenger is based on the long-running franchise created by legendary schlock film studio Troma. You can read a description of the film below:

"While the original film (which premiered in 1984 -- almost 40 years ago!) followed the fate of Melvin Ferd Junko III (Mitch Cohen), who goes from zero to toxic hero in a case of bullying gone awry, Macon Blair's contemporary take follows a hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength all his own. Peter Dinklage stars as downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze who, after falling into a vat of toxic waste, becomes none other than The Toxic Avenger. This timely reimagining is up to its eyeballs in environmental themes as Winston goes up against the evil forces of greed and corruption to save his son, his friends, and his community.

Even as this story exists on its own terms, the spirit undoubtedly remains connected to the original. Troma fans old and new will be pleased to know that the film has been rated R for violence and gore -- as per Troma tradition."

"It's not a remake. I just like guerrilla filmmaking," Dinklage previously told Empire. "Those movies - they just made them, no matter what. They just did it because they love doing it. Some of them are not the best, but some are so much fun. When you make movies too clean, it can distance the audience. They want to feel the dirt under their fingernails. I think those Troma films definitely dipped the audience in toxic waste."

Disney's California Adventure is getting some massive expansions in the coming years. D23 highlighted a good number of these. (Avengers fans rejoice because a lot is coming to Avengers Campus including Iron Man!) But, Avatar Land is clearly a point of focus for the Parks as the future unfolds down in Anaheim, California.

"We're taking our guests to a whole new location on Pandora as all of you know our land in Florida is set in a rainforest amongst the floating mountains in the Mo'ara Valley which to me feels just like we're stepping into the first Avatar film, "Ali Rubenstein told the people in attendance. "Our new destination we're inspired by the second movie The Way of Water as well as the upcoming Fire and Ash, and future Avatar films. It will be at a scale and at a level that is worthy of these epic stories. One thing I'm particularly looking forward to is an innovative new attraction that will bring all the action, all the excitement and all the wonder of Avatar to life in a completely new and thrilling way."

Deadpool & Wolverine Retakes #1 Box Office https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-box-office-number-one-alien-blink-twice-crow-blake-lively/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 15:53:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 8fc032f9-9bb3-48fb-b79e-63cee19215f1

Deadpool & Wolverine is retaking the top spot at the box office this weekend. After Alien: Romulus slithered in a pole position, Marvel's summer smash claimed the throne again. Deadpool & Wolverine is looking at a $17.8 million weekend at the movie theater. The latest installment in the Alien franchise is in hot pursuit with $16 million. All of this is bad news for Blink Twice and The Crow. The two newest additions to the box office seen this week look to come in at $7 million and $5 million respectively. (Channing Tatum is still an absolute winner for giving us Gambit this summer, everything else is icing on the cake at this point.) But, yes Deadpool & Wolverine's tour rolls on!

Tatum's turn as Gambit has everyone rooting for him to play the mutant again. That includes co-star Ryan Reynolds. On Instagram, the Deadpool star has been stumping for a revival of that X-Men project. "Gambit is a guy Chan was born to play. His story is similar to mine in that he spent a decade trying to put the most comic-accurate version of Gambit on the big screen," Reynolds began. "Remy LeBeau is grafted to his soul and needs to come out and deal. And Gambit found his author in Chan. He's one of the coolest, smartest characters in comics and still largely unexplored."

"I want more -- and from what I saw in theaters, you do too," Reynolds argued. "Having the chance to say goodbye to some of these heroes is as important as having new characters to root for... and rooting for Gambit is easy. Rooting for Chan is even easier. He's one of the greatest, hardest working, kindest people in this entire industry. I couldn't be more thrilled to see @channingtatum pull Gambit from the dead and bring him to life at the perfect time and perfect way."

Alien: Romulus Director Confirms One Connection to The Last of Us https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/alien-romulus-to-the-last-of-us-inspiration/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 14:35:00 +0000 Tanner Dedmon 687f5abf-377a-49e1-b2ad-1408e92ccbf5

Alien: Romulus viewers have been drawing comparisons between the Alien movie's protagonist, Rain, and Ellie from The Last of Us nonstop since the movie's premiere, but as it turns out, there is an actual connection between the movie and game that's been confirmed by the director. It doesn't have anything to do with Cailee Spaeny's character Rain and Ellie, however, and instead deals with Kay, the pregnant character in Alien: Romulus whose pregnancy becomes a core part of the movie. Alien: Romulus director Fede Alvarez confirmed this week that Kay's character was in fact inspired by Dina from The Last of Us Part 2.

Alvarez discussed the connection over on X after one of many people asked him if he'd played The Last of Us. He confirmed that he had and said that he was actually playing The Last of Us Part 2 when writing Alien: Romulus. Upon seeing that Dina was pregnant in the game, he found inspiration for Kay.

"Fun fact: I was playing #TheLastOfUs2 while writing #AlienRomulus," he said on X. "The story of a pregnant Dina made me think of having the character of Kay be pregnant too. Then I cast Isabella Merced to play Kay.... A year later she gets cast to play Dina on the HBO show.... True story."

As Alvarez pointed out, the relationship here is even more uncanny than a normal inspiration for the character given that actress Isabella Merced played Kay in Alien: Romulus and has also been cast as Dina in the second season of HBO's The Last of Us TV show. We haven't seen Merced in the show yet since Season 2 has yet to be released, but we've heard plenty from her about her character's relationship with Ellie as well as what it's been like working on some of the tougher parts of Season 2. The next season has wrapped filming now, but it doesn't have a release date yet.

As for Alien: Romulus, Alvarez has been revealing more and more details like these now that the movie's out with people realizing that there are probably several things they didn't pick up on during their first watch. There's of course the question of whether or not we'll see Rain in another Alien movie in the future, perhaps as a sequel to Alien: Romulus, but nothing's been confirmed at this time.

Pixar Chief Explains What They Want Out of Sequels https://comicbook.com/movies/news/pixar-inside-out-incredibles-3-pete-docter-explains-sequel-strategy/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 14:16:00 +0000 Aaron Perine b7aebb20-3fce-42a8-8be9-045334362207

Pixar's Chief Creative Officer talked about the way the studio approaches sequels. Pete Docter talked to Fandango about what qualities they're looking for in new projects. The Pixar head explained that looking for audience approval can be difficult. So, when coming up with a new sequel, the main idea of a movie has to feel like something necessary to the world established in that first movie. In essence, like most good sequels, the new entry in a franchise has to push the concept forward in a way that's unexpected or at least novel to draw audiences in. You can check out all of what Docter had to say about picking their spots right here down below.

"It's a combo, because of course, we're making these for the audience, not for ourselves, so you want to know if they'll be well-received," Docter explained. "Then, we do have a sort of guideline or guardrail that if we get a certain way in it's not feeling like it's about something new and substantive, then we'll cut bait. So, it's imperative that something feels like, 'Oh, this is furthering the story!'"

He continued, "I was talking about something that we didn't explore in the first one. Or, something deeper that we didn't explore about the human condition or our own experiences in life."

The Incredibles 3 Has Finally Been Announced

Pixar's recent success with sequels makes the announcement of more a natural occurrence. This month's D23 fan event saw Disney pull up the curtain on The Incredibles 3. Fans are excited to see this family back in action. But, no one knows what the plot of this film will be yet. During the same interview with Fandango, Docter tried to give a little information about how Brad Bird is approaching the next entry in the franchise. For that filmmaker, it's always about some sort of big moment that he's looking to drill down into. Expect the story to tug at your heart strings in a real way.

"Brad [Bird] is an amazing collaborator. He's so fiery and passionate. Different people work different ways," Docter shared. "He's a guy who needs a little more time to build up the steam to get the passion and the power going. I think we're at that point now. And we're not sharing any details right now, because it's still pretty malleable in terms of what the story is actually about."

"The great thing about Brad's films, when you look at Ratatouille, on one level, it's a fun romp about a rat that wants to cook," Docter recalled. "But, really when you dig deeper, it's about 'What does it take to do that?' The passion versus opportunity. He's always got these deeper sociological ideas and so I think that's where we're starting from."

Is Martian Manhunter Headed to the DCU? https://comicbook.com/movies/news/dcu-introduce-martian-manhunter-chocos-justice-league-superman-peacemaker/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 04:27:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson f1841745-60ef-4155-b389-34c9b1e8c0c6

A number of new DC movies and television shows are expected to debut in the next few years, thanks to the guidance of current DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The duo have promised to showcase plenty of beloved and unexpected elements from DC's comics on the big screen, as already evident by the number of characters and titles confirmed for their new DC Universe. On Friday, Gunn added an interesting layer to fans' speculations, posting a photo of a physical package of Chocos, the DC analog to Oreo cookies that are beloved by J'onn J'onnz / Martian Manhunter. With in-universe advertisements for Chocos already spotted on the set of Gunn's Superman movie, there's no telling exactly how the snack brand will be utilized in-universe. Still, it has led to one question in fans' minds -- could we see Martian Manhunter join the DCU sooner than later?

While Martian Manhunter's overall superhero gimmick -- being a stoic and powerful survivor of an alien war on Mars -- has very little to do with Chocos, his love of the snack has become a part of his characterization since it was introduced in the Justice League International run of the 1980s. It has also already made its way into media beyond the comics, as his identity was teased on Smallville by Clark Kent (Tom Welling) discovering stray cookies across town, and the snack was also hinted at in last year's Blue Beetle movie. It wouldn't be unheard of for the new DCU to use Chocos to lay the groundwork for J'onn's introduction, even as he isn't currently publicly confirmed to be appearing in any of the franchise's projects.

Of course, that then raises a whole separate question of how Martian Manhunter could be folded into the DCU. At the moment, with the debut of the first new DC Studios project still several months away, there are plenty of possibilities. There is always the chance that the DCU could hide J'onn in plain sight, only to later reveal that he is secretly the shapeshifting superhero, a trope that has been used to varying levels of success in Smallville, Supergirl, Zack Snyder's DCEU, and even the infamous Justice League of America TV movie. An argument could be made for a twist of that nature working in virtually every confirmed DCU project thus far, whether in live-action or animation.

That being said, there are plenty of avenues for the DCU to have Martian Manhunter established without any sort of twist, especially given the narrative and thematic beats that seem to be on the horizon for the franchise. Superman has been teasing a version of the Justice League that is corporately owned by businessman Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn), which has led to speculation that the fan-favorite Justice League International roster either already exists, or will exist at a later point. To an extent, J'onn's involvement in that version of the team is too vital to ignore, and would help introduce the character in a different manner than his previous live-action incarnations. The same can be said for how the DCU plans to introduce the concept of the Justice League as a whole, as Martian Manhunter is a founding member of the team in both the pre-Crisis and post-Crisis continuities, and could be baked into the new live-action history as a result.

Even beyond that, the new DCU seems to have room to introduce Martian Manhunter as a few steps away from being an established hero, potentially even in some sort of solo project. J'onn's time as a private eye or police detective, particularly in Steve Orlando and Riley Rossmo's genre-bending 2018 Martian Manhunter maxiseries, could provide another cosmic True Detective-esque project alongside the forthcoming Lanterns television show. There's also the prevailing theory that Gunn and Safran's plans for the universe will lead to an adaptation of Darwyn Cooke's beloved comic miniseries DC: The New Frontier, as their "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters" subtitle for the slate is lifted directly from that text. Martian Manhunter plays a significant role in the original events of New Frontier, so having him in the theoretical live-action adaptation doesn't seem like too much of a long shot. Even then, it has been safe to assume that Gunn and Safran's DCU will be filled with surprises, and we'll just have to wait and see if Martian Manhunter ends up being one of them.

Deadpool & Wolverine: Bruce Campbell Reveals Why Pizza Poppa Didn't Appear https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-bruce-campbell-why-pizza-poppa-didnt-appear/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 02:38:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson d532845e-786b-4f78-975f-443895e99142

Deadpool & Wolverine made its way into theaters almost a month ago, putting Marvel fans through a wild journey across the Marvel multiverse. Among the list of irreverent characters who did not factor into Deadpool & Wolverine's universe-hopping frenzy was Pizza Poppa, portrayed by Bruce Campbell in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While speaking to ComicBook at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 to promote his upcoming series Hysteria!, Campbell offered a frank explanation for why Pizza Poppa doesn't make any sort of appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine.

"He's not in that timeline. He's in a different timeline," Campbell revealed, before adding, "Well, here's what I say to Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Get a room. What's with the bromance? We get it. Thank you. Next. Go back to your soccer team, Ryan."

Will Deadpool and Wolverine Return in the MCU?

Given Deadpool & Wolverine's multiversal bent and massive box office sucess, and the looming threat of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars in the coming years, fans have naturally wondered if Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will reprise their roles in the future. In an interview with Variety prior to the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, the duo were tight-lipped about what their onscreen futures might hold.

"I don't know," Reynolds answered. "Yeah, we'll see. Yeah."

"Clearly, this is our first major interview of this press tour," Jackman added. "I'm not sure how to answer."

The Killer Stars Reveal a Real Motorcycle on Fire Was Used for a Key Shot in the Film https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-killer-stars-reveal-a-real-motorcycle-on-fire-was-used-for-a-key-shot-in-the-film/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 01:54:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak b46532af-017b-4739-8d6b-fcc0143941e6

John Woo remade one of his iconic films, and it dropped on Peackcock today. Woo's The Killer was released back in 1989, and it starred Chow Yun-Fat as a hitman. Now, Game of Thrones and Fast Saga star Nathalie Emmanuel is taking on the role. The new cast also includes Omar Sy (Lupin) as Sey, Eric Cantona (The Fragile Colossus, Elizabeth) as Gobert, Tch?ky Karyo (Le Femme Nikita, GoldenEye) as Tessier, and Gr?gory Montel (Call My Agent!, Transatlantic) as Jax. ComicBook recently had the chance to chat with Emmanuel and Sy, and they revealed a real motorcycle on fire jumped over them during an action-packed scene.

"No," Sy replied with a laugh when asked if he ever imagined he'd get to shoot guns at a motorcycle going over his head. "Actually that's why it's amazing to do what we do and having the opportunity with this movie ... Shooting a John Woo movie in Paris ... just beyond the dream ... I've personally never thought about it, but we are so grateful and happy to have that experience. And to see the movie at the end is just amazing, and we're so proud."

"Yeah, we did," Emmanuel confirmed when asked if a real motorcycle went over their heads. "We did, actually," Sy added.

"That stunt performer, I'm sad to say, I don't know his name, but he really did something that I hadn't seen before with my own eyes of jumping over like a whole set whilst on fire," Emmanuel added. "So he's doing that blind..."

"In the situation, after the jump there is ... I think like four or five meters before another wall," Sy explained. "So he has to land and break ... you have like 5 meters to break. He's an amazing performer."

You can watch our interview with Emmanuel and Sy at the top of the page.

You can read the movie's synopsis here: "The Killer stars The Fast Saga's Nathalie Emmanuel as Zee, a mysterious and infamous assassin known, and feared, in the Parisian underworld as the Queen of the Dead. But when, during an assignment from her shadowy mentor and handler Finn (Sam Worthington), Zee refuses to kill a blinded young woman, Jenn (Diana Silvers), in a Paris nightclub, the decision will disintegrate Zee's alliances, attract the attention of a savvy police investigator Sy (Omar Sy), and plunge her into a sinister criminal conspiracy that will set her on a collision course with her own past."

The screenplay for The Killer hails from Oscar winner Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential, Mystic River), and is produced by Oscar winner Charles Roven (Oppenheimer, American Hustle) and Alex Gartner (Uncharted, Warcraft) for Atlas Entertainment, and by John Woo and Lori Tilkin deFelice (Silent Night) for Better Tomorrow Films. The film's executive producers are Terence Chang and Robin Fisichella.
