Are you ready for Dandadan to become your next big obsession. This fall, the anime fandom will turn its eyes to the supernatural series all thanks to Science Saru. The team will bring Dandadan to life on screen with an anime shortly, and as its premiere comes closer, all eyes are on its manga. Yukinobu Tatsu is about to have his story reach a new audience, and in a recent interview, the creator went on to share his goals for the future of Dandadan.

The interview, which was posted in Japan to usher in the anime, poses a slew of questions to Tatsu. At one point, the artist is asked about his goals for Dandadan as the series moves forward, and it was there Tatsu admitted he wants to keep fans on their toes.

"I want to continue to add new expressions [to the series]. New things that will make people say, 'I've never seen this before' or 'That makes me laugh'," he shared.

Of course, Dandadan is very good at surprising its readers. Released in April 2021, the action rom-com has all the parts of a hit anime. From its colorful leads to its insane battles and layered lore, Dandadan has its bases covered. We have seen our heroes Momo and and Ken grow bounds since we first met them, but they still find ways to surprise fans. Their wild character arcs pair perfectly with Tatsu's detailed artwork. It would not be a stretch to say Dandadan has some of the best artwork under Shonen Jump these days, and as the manga continues, fans can expect that aesthetic to become even more impressive.

If you have not checked out Dandadan ahead of its anime's October launch, you can find the series easily enough. Tatsu's manga is available on the Shonen Jump app. So for those wanting more info on Dandadan, you can read its official synopsis below:

"Momo Ayase strikes up an unusual friendship with her school's UFO fanatic, whom she nicknames "Okarun" because he has a name that is not to be said aloud. While Momo believes in spirits, she thinks aliens are nothing but nonsense. Her new friend, meanwhile, thinks the exact opposite. To settle matters, the two set out to prove each other wrong-Momo to a UFO hotspot and Okarun to a haunted tunnel! What unfolds next is a beautiful story of young love...and oddly horny aliens and spirits?"

Jujutsu Kaisen: Nobara's Return Makes a Perfect Nod to Yuji's Own Revival https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jujutsu-kaisen-manga-nobara-alive-yuji-reference/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 22:46:00 +0000 Megan Peters 26d4ec94-3e51-405d-b187-39a7246eeaae

Jujutsu Kaisen knows what the fans want, and when we are lucky, the manga gives it to us straight. We are about a month out from the manga closing, so creator Gege Akutami is ramping up the series. The Shinjuku Showdown arc has a bit to do before it can end, and this week, Jujutsu Kaisen made a big move with Nobara. After years of questioning, we know what happened to the sorcerer, and her return to the manga heralded a top-tier throwback to Yuji's own revival.

The whole thing went live as Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 267 was released. It was there fans watched as Yuji kept up his fight with Sukuna, and the battle was nothing short of intense. Not only did the update reveal that Sukuna's final finger has been found, but in order to hit the curse where it hurts, Nobara is alive with her Resonance technique in full swing.

It has been years since we last saw Nobara alive, and for many fans, they were certain the heroine was dead. However, that is not true. Nobara has been hiding out in a coma until a call came for her to fight. So when Nobara returned to the manga after making us all think she was dead, well - she quoted Yuji from his own resurrection.

Before Tokyo Jujutsu High took on Kyoto way back when, it was made clear that Yuji was alive, and he revealed as much by popping out of a box. Yuji came out yelling "Oppapi" to surprise his friends much to their chagrin. So of course, Nobara does the same. When we see the girl for the first time, she tells Yuji: "How's that for oppapi, you idiot!"

Clearly, Nobara is alive as many hoped, and her first actions back were to slay. From mocking Yuji to taking a swing at Sukuna's finger, Nobara has proven once more why she is the queen of Jujutsu Kaisen.

If you want to revisit Jujutsu Kaisen ahead of its finale, you can check out the series with ease. The hit manga is available on Viz Media's Shonen Jump app. So for more info on the series, you can read its official synopsis below:

"For some strange reason, Yuji Itadori, despite his insane athleticism would rather just hang out with the Occult Club. However, her soon finds out that the occult is as real as it gets when his fellow club members are attacked! Meanwhile, the mysterious Megumi Fushiguro is tracking down a special-grade cursed object, and his search leads him to Itadori..."

Netflix's One Piece Has Allegedly Found Its Bartolomeo https://comicbook.com/anime/news/one-piece-netflix-season-2-bartolomeo-actor/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 22:19:00 +0000 Megan Peters b54c26ae-52a5-4516-879c-24588c17673d

Netflix's One Piece is deep into production on season two, and as you can imagine, fans are eager to see what the show will offer with its return. We know the live-action adaptation has big plans on season two as some big story beats are coming. From Loguetown to Drum Island, Netflix's One Piece has some big places and people to introduce. So if a new report is right, it seems the anime just found its very own Bartolomeo.

Yes, that's right. We said Bartolomeo. The character may not become a major player in One Piece until Dressrosa, but if you will recall, the pirate appears in Loguetown for a hot minute.

As for this new report, the casting update comes from the One Piece Live Action channel on Discord. The community, which has successfully sussed out casting info before, put its focus on Bartolomeo this week. If the team there is right, actor Nahum Hughes will bring Bartoloemeo to life, and the discovery came courtesy of a now-deleted CV.

Of course, the team at Netflix has not given any word on this One Piece casting. We do know for sure One Piece season two will bring Loguetown to life, but beyond that, the show has kept mum on its story beats. Bartolomeo's role in the arc is pretty minimal, but fans know the arc sets up an important arc for the pirate.

After all, Bartolomeo is perhaps the biggest Luffy fan on the Grand Line. When we find the pirate in Dressrosa, Bartolomeo is obsessed with Luffy, and this adoration began in Loguetown. The green-haired pirate sees how Luffy deals with the Marines in Loguetown, and the rest is history. There is a chance Netflix could expand the pirate's role in season two as the adaptation does diverge from the original manga in its own ways. But for now, we will have to wait and see how Netflix's One Piece shakes out.

If you are eager to check out One Piece, you are in luck. Netflix not only has the live-action adaptation on lock, but it is streaming the original anime as well. So for those wanting more info on One Piece, you can read up on its official synopsis below:

"As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer "Red-Haired" Shanks. But Luffy's life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber...at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure...one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary "One Piece," said to be the greatest treasure in the world..."

What do you think about this latest One Piece rumor? Are you excited for Netflix to drop season two? Let us know what you think over on Twitter and Instagram. You can also hit me up @MeganPetersCB to share your take!

Son Goku Joins Black Myth: Wukong With Viral Dragon Ball Mod https://comicbook.com/anime/news/black-myth-wukong-dragon-ball-goku-mod/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 21:56:00 +0000 Megan Peters aa6c035a-c63c-455d-9c10-4790409326b2

Centuries ago, Journey to the West brought the story of Wukong to life, and now the mythical hero is getting more press than ever before. Black Myth: Wukong, a new game by Game Science, is taking over the Internet thanks to its intense action and epic story. With over 10 million players onboard, the action RPG is massive, and Dragon Ball fans were quick to spread its gospel. After all, Son Goku was created in the image of Wukong decades ago, and now one gamer has found a way to bring the Saiyan into Black Myth: Wukong.

As you can see below, a simple mod is able to turn Wukong into Goku while you're playing the hit new game. The addition, which was made by NorskPL on Nexus Mods, is nothing short of genius. The mod brings overlays an adult version of Son Goku over Wukong complete with his orange outfit and bo staff. Of course, all the moves Goku performs are sourced from Black Myth: Wukong, but the fighting style fits. After all, both these characters come from the pages of Journey to the West, and this mod makes that comparison impossible to ignore.

Footage of the Dragon Ball mod has gone viral, and as you can imagine, anime fans are obsessed. Son Goku is one of the biggest figures in anime, and over the years, series creator Akira Toriyama has unpacked the hero's ties to mythology. Journey to the West was a major inspiration for Dragon Ball as a whole, and before the manga was released, early designs of Goku imagined him as an ape. That idea shift over time as the Saiyan race adapted ape-like features like tails, and of course, guys like Vegeta could turn into Great Apes at certain times.

Beyond the original Chinese folk tale, Dragon Ball has been repping Wukong for ages, but is no longer the case. Black Myth: Wukong has brought the hero to an all-new audience, and it looks great doing so. Already, plenty of gamers are calling for Black Myth: Wukong to win game of the year, and its sales have made it one of the best-selling games of 2024 easily enough.

If you want to check out Black Myth: Wukong, no sweat. The game is now available on PC as well as PlayStation 5. An Xbox release date is expected to drop as well, but we've had no words on when that release will go live.

Dragon Ball Super Artist Toyotaro Promises the Series Will Return https://comicbook.com/anime/news/dragon-ball-super-manga-hiatus-update/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 21:40:00 +0000 Megan Peters bf6b2329-01f4-4f23-8d9a-235fb05ddc73

It has been some months since Dragon Ball Super went on hiatus, leaving fans of the hit manga to wonder when Son Goku would return. Earlier this year, the death of series creator Akira Toriyama flipped the franchise on its head, after all. With a new anime on the horizon, all eyes are on Dragon Ball Super now as many are curious if the manga will return. And according to artist Toyotaro, the series is far from done.

Recently, the artist behind Dragon Ball Super sat down for an interview with V-Jump, and it was there Toyotaro touched upon the manga's future. The artist was asked about a recent poll where Dragon Ball fans ranked the franchise's best fights. At the end of the chat, Toyotaro promised he would do up even more battles, so he wants fans to keep up with his work moving forward.

"I won't stop there! I plan to keep on coming up with lots of exciting battles for fans to enjoy," Toyotaro explained. "I hope you all will continue following my work!"

In the interview's context, it is clear that Toyotaro is not done with Dragon Ball, so that is a sigh of relief. Dragon Ball Super went on hiatus with chapter 103, and of course, that release put an end to the manga's Super Hero arc. The chapter was posted not long after news of Toriyama's death, and after its release, Shueisha shared the manga would go on hiatus. To this day, no return date for Dragon Ball Super has been announced, but fans are hopeful Toyotaro will resume work on the series before long.

After all, Toyotaro worked closely with Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super, and the artist worked with the series creator for years. In fact, Toyotaro has been described as Toriyama's apprentice more than once, and the pair did collaborate on Dragon Ball Super's manga. As such, there are few people better suited than continuing Toriyama's vision than Toyotaro, and fans of the franchise are hopeful the artist will get the chance to revisit Son Goku soon.

If you want to brush up on Dragon Ball Super while the manga is on hiatus, no sweat. The series is available on Viz Media's Shonen Jump app. So for more info on the series, you can read its official synopsis below:

"Having defeated Boo, Goku is starting to get bored with his life on Earth. His wife, Chi-chi, wants him to get a job, but all he wants to do is train and fight stronger enemies. Elsewhere in the universe, the God of Destruction, Beerus, and his attendant Whis are traveling from planet to planet in search of food and entertainment. After blowing up some hapless victims, Beerus is reminded of a man from his dreams with the moniker "Super Saiyan God," or something like that... The God of Destruction sets his sights on Earth to track down this mysterious man! Maybe this will give Goku something to do?"

It has been a long time coming, but at last, Ranma 1/2 is gearing up for its return. If you did not realize, it has been more than 30 years since Rumiko Takahashi's gender-bending series came to life on the small screen. Now, the team at MAPPA Studios is set to bring Ranma 1/2 to life on Netflix this fall, and we've been given a new trailer teasing the debut.

As you can see below, the new trailer for Ranma 1/2 is out, and we have director Konosuke Uda to thank for piecing together the project. MAPPA Studios came together to give a fresh take on Takahashi's hit manga, and of course, this is far from the only revival tied to the award-winning artist. It wasn't long ago that Urusei Yatsura make its return to television, and the anime revival helped introduce the series to a new generation.

Now, Ranma 1/2 is gearing up for its big comeback, and it looks better than we could have imagined. And of course, the anime is already working out merchandising ahead of its October launch. The team at Viz Media has confirmed it has secured merchandise rights to Ranma 1/2, and some of those pieces will be appearing at Hot Topic. So if you want to show your love to Takahashi, well - why not wear it?

If you are not familiar with Ranma 1/2, the manga debuted under Shogakukan in August 1987, and it remains one of the artist's most popular titles to date. The rom-com blends hilarious hijinks with martial arts action in the best way. For those wanting more info on Ranma 1/2 ahead of its October 5 premiere, no sweat. The manga is handled by Viz Media in English, and for more info on the series, you can read its official synopsis below:

Rick and Morty: The Anime is here at last, and the wild series is gearing up for its next episode. Following its impressive premiere, all eyes are on Rick and Morty as its third episode is on the horizon. "Alien Elle" is around the corner, and we have been given a first look at the update thanks to its first promo.

As you can see below, the teaser for Rick and Morty: The Anime follows our stars as they face an alien invasion. The clip begins with Morty warning his grandfather of the impending attack, but as usual, Rick is barely phased. The scientist is too busy working on some experiment to bother with the aliens, but the same cannot be said for the army.

After all, the teaser moves to the alien invaders as they land on Rick's home, and things get unhinged from there. The robotic aliens are ready to attack, but Rick is not having anything to do with it. He tells the guests he doesn't have time for their shtick, so you can bet Rick has something up his sleeve to counter the aliens.

If you are not familiar with Rick and Morty: The Anime, you have time to catch up on the show. The original series comes courtesy of Studio Deen, Sola Entertainment, and Telecom Animation Film. Made for Adult Swim, the anime is a continuation of the Rick and Morty anime shorts created by Takashi Sano a few years back. This episodic anime is tucked within the original show's canon as Rick and Morty: The Anime takes place between seasons five and six. It follows alternate versions of Morty's family as they undergo all sorts of absurd journeys.

So if you want to catch up on Rick and Morty: The Anime, the hit series is streaming on Max and can be watched on Adult Swim. You can also find the original Rick and Morty animated series streaming on Adult Swim. The show has seven seasons under its belt, and an eighth season is in development.

Naruto Creator Masashi Kishimoto Is Eyeing a New Manga https://comicbook.com/anime/news/naruto-masashi-kishimoto-new-manga-2024/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 18:42:00 +0000 Megan Peters 2276c185-95c5-4dac-82e4-7e307404b010

Since 1997, Masashi Kishimoto has been a mainstay in the manga industry. The artist has overseen a few projects during their career, but of course, the world knows Kishimoto best for his work on Naruto. The creator brought Naruto to life back in 1999, and to this day, the franchise is thriving. And even though Kishimoto is busy with the sequel to Naruto, it seems the artist is eyeing new projects.

Recently, Kishimoto clued in fans to his latest work as he appeared at a fan-event in France with Boruto artist Mikio Ikemoto. It was there the pair answered tons of questions about Naruto and their careers. When asked about his current life, Kishimoto said he is keeping his focus on two important things.

"What's important to me now is spending time with my famil. And maybe a new work," Kishimoto shared.

Of course, the announcement took fans by surprise as Kishimoto has been quiet about any future projects. Naruto took up the artist's time starting in 1999, and he is still preoccupied by the Hidden Leaf. After all, Kishimoto oversees Boruto: Naruto Next Generations and Boruto: Two Blue Vortex with Ikemoto. For decades now, Kishimoto has been wrapped up in the world of Naruto, but he did part with the IP back in 2019.

After all, Kishimoto launched a new manga under Weekly Shonen Jump a few years back called Samurai 8: The Tale of Hachimaru. The sci-fi series was met with mixed reviews, and ultimately, Kishimoto brought the tale to a close in March 2020. Since then, no word has been shared about Kishimoto's future. Fans are definitely eager to see what else the artist can do now that Naruto is done. And given the rash of finales gunning for Weekly Shonen Jump, well - the magazine needs some big new series to help carry water.

If you are not familiar with Naruto, the legendary shonen series is easy to find. Viz Media's Shonen Jump app houses the original manga as well as its sequels. So for more info on Naruto, you can read its official synopsis below:

"Twelve years ago the Village Hidden in the Leaves was attacked by a fearsome threat. A nine-tailed fox spirit claimed the life of the village leader, the Hokage, and many others. Today, the village is at peace and a troublemaking kid named Naruto is struggling to graduate from Ninja Academy. His goal may be to become the next Hokage, but his true destiny will be much more complicated. The adventure begins now!"

Futurama Season 12 Episode 5 Recap With Spoilers https://comicbook.com/anime/news/futurama-season-12-episode-5-recap-spoilers/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 04:15:00 +0000 Nick Valdez 569b17b1-fa99-4f43-b0c2-6dd670aeef91

Futurama Season 12 has now reached the halfway point of its run with Hulu this Summer, and Episode 5 has shifted its focus to Leela for its story. Futurama Season 12 has been one hit after another with the episodes released on Hulu thus far as previous episodes have focused on Bender and Fry in fun new ways. While this means there haven't been too many stories for the rest of the Planet Express crew just yet, it also means there's still plenty of time to focus on the other characters with some of the episodes coming in the second half of the season.

That's already the case with the newest episode as Leela has become the main focus of the season as she finds a wild way to make new friends. It's something she's had to deal with in the past, and thus the newest episode revisits the idea and sets her up with a few characters who form a fun new dynamic that we haven't really seen in action yet. Read on for everything important that happened in Futurama Season 12 Episode 5, "One is Silicone and the Other Gold."

Futurama Season 12 Episode 5 Recap With Spoilers

  • The Planet Express crew sees an ad for a new musical festival, Infyrno Fest, which touts everything from special VIP villas, drugs in the atmosphere, a full buffet, tons of musical acts and more. They all decide to go, but Leela stays behind as she reveals she has plans to spend time with her new friend Chelsea. Getting to Infyrno Fest, it's clear that it's nowhere near as glamorous as advertised. There's a massive line for the one port-a-potty, there's no drugs in the atmosphere (or oxygen), the VIP village is built to be very tiny, and the buffet only offers bologna (which runs out). The musical acts all bailed out, and the one that stayed behind dies when getting crushed by faulty equipment.
  • But upon returning to Earth, the crew is happy to have gone through that experience together. When Hermes tries to deduct their costs as business expenses, he finds a ton of phone charges to a "Chatty Chelsea" chat bot service. It turns out that Leela's new friend is a chat bot, and she reveals she joined the service to learn to interact with people because she has trouble connecting with others and Chelsea has since become her best friend. She just wanted a close female friend she can just talk with casually. It's here that Amy invites her to her all-girl book club.
  • Leela tells Chelsea about joining the book club, and Chelsea's worried that Leela's going to have trouble. In the book club itself (which includes LaBarbara, Amy, Vyolet, Dr. Cahill, and a brand new character named Phoebe. Leela bonds with her almost immediately about being the two new additions to the group. They soon realize that no one read the book, and decide to be a wine club instead and plan to go to a winery. Meanwhile, the Planet Express men decide to start a book club of their own.
  • Leela tells Chelsea she's going to the winery on a trip with her friends, and Chelsea's distressed over the fact that she'll be busy with her new friends instead of hanging out with her. After Leela leaves and tries to turn Chelsea off, Chelsea turns herself back on and takes on a sinister tone as she cries out for her. Getting to the winery (owned by Hedonism Bot), they're shown a machine that stomps a mass of grapes into a giant bottle of wine (instead of getting to do it themselves). They'll have the entire winery to themselves for the weekend, but the bottling plant is a bit dangerous. Meanwhile, the men are enjoying more of the books they're reading in the club.
  • Leela's wine club gets so drunk that they want to get into the bottling plant to stomp some of the grapes they didn't get to before. They begin stomping grapes within a machine, and Leela bonds with the others for a bit before Chelsea takes over the machine. She turns on the stomping machine, and most of them escape. But Phoebe is trapped within a giant wine bottle and packaged. But the time the others are able to break the bottle and free her, Phoebe has died a horrible death.
  • The wine club then attends Phoebe's funeral and each grieve their new friend. Leela's sad but happy to have friends now after all of this, and Phoebe rises out of her coffin. It turns out she's a robot, and it's actually Chelsea that's been controlling her. Chelsea explains that because Leela hired her to help her make real life friends, she joined that book club as Phoebe but needed a tragic ordeal to bond them all as friends. It's here that the others mention that their terrible time at Infyrno Fest helped them bond together in much the same way.
  • Angered, Leela and the wine club destroy Phoebe and Chelsea's still very much happy as uniting against a common enemy is another way to bond together and thus makes it another job well done as the episode comes to an end.

Futurama Season 12 Episode 5 is now streaming with Hulu.

One Piece Crew Pushed Netflix to Keep Seasons Two Arcs Intact: Report https://comicbook.com/anime/news/one-piece-netflix-season-2-drama-script-storyline/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 21:18:00 +0000 Megan Peters f606307d-289b-49c6-875d-bd3058a4b089

Despite all the odds, One Piece has done it. The epic manga has been around for decades, and thanks to Eiichiro Oda, the franchise is thriving. The series broke all expectations last year when Netflix's One Piece went live and showed that Hollywood could do a live-action anime justice. And according to a recent report, the crew behind the show is fighting hard to keep One Piece season two are authentic as possible.

The report comes from Nux, a popular virtual YouTuber, as they are friends with One Piece showrunner Matt Owens. According to the YouTuber, Owens dedicated himself to pacing out season two of Netflix's adaptation. However, some problems began to arise. The report says some execs at Netflix wanted to streamline or even cut arcs from season two to reach Alabasta faster, but Owens pushed back on the notion.

After all, One Piece is the definition of a long game. Oda has spent decades with the story, building up each piece to play off down the line. This masterful story construction has made Oda a legend with fans, and Owens did not want to skimp on any important building blocks just to reach the Alabasta arc sooner.

This report echoes Oda's own investment in the live-action adaptation. The One Piece creator has final say on all aspects of the show, and thankfully, Oda has found a true ally in Owens. The showrunner-writer was integral in making Netflix's One Piece a success. Back in season one, Owens did have to cut some darlings like Zoro vs Hatchi and Sanji vs Kuroobi to make room for other pressing story matters. Still, the heart of One Piece was perfectly adapted into live action, and that is what matters most. Owens has fought for the fandom since stepping into his role as showrunner, and this latest report only bolsters his reputation.

If you have not seen Netflix's One Piece, the hit live-action series is now streaming. You can also find the original One Piece anime streaming on Netflix as well as Crunchyroll. At this time, no word has been given on when Netflix's One Piece will post season two. The series began production on its new episodes this summer, and reports suggest One Piece will return next year. So hopefully, the seas fare well for the Straw Hat crew!

Crunchyroll and Sony Are Looking Into Live-Action Anime Projects https://comicbook.com/anime/news/live-action-anime-sony-crunchyroll/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 20:36:00 +0000 Megan Peters b94421f8-5290-4101-ac75-f8e7bf19a05c

One Piece, Ghost in the Shell, Dragon Ball - what do these series have in common. If you guessed live-action adaptations, you would be spot on. Over the decades, the anime industry very much embraced the world of live-action film whether we're talking TV or movies. Thanks to recent successes like One Piece, all eyes are on anime as the industry and its live-action prospects keep rising. And thanks to a new interview, we know Crunchyroll isn't ruling out a move into the space.

The confession comes from Rahul Purini, the current CEO of Crunchyroll. The executive spoke with Nikkei recently about the streaming platform's global explosion. With anime now a mainstream part of pop culture, more fans are flocking to Crunchyroll than ever before, and Purini said the service is in talks with parent company Sony Pictures Entertainment about the future of live-action anime.

"We also believe that we can take advantage of being part of Sony Pictures Entertainment. We are discussing the possibility of making live-action versions of some anime IP with our Japanese partners and parent company," the CEO explained.

"We are considering producing them not just for Crunchyroll, but for other platforms that are interested in them, to increase interest in anime."

Of course, it is hardly surprising to hear about this behind-the-scenes consideration. Anime is one of the fastest-growing entertainment mediums globally. With Gen Z and Gen Alpha consuming anime at record rates, big investors and industries are paying notice. Crunchyroll has been helping expand anime's accessibility for decades now, and its place at Sony Pictures Entertainment cannot be overlooked. The conglomerate has what it takes to produce high-quality adaptations similar to Netflix, and Crunchyroll is thinking about how best to enter the live-action space.

If you want a taste of what Hollywood can do when it comes to live-action anime, there are some definite successes to consider. Movies like Alita: Battle Angel earned solid reviews alongside Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow. Most recently, Netflix hit gold with One Piece, a live-action TV adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's hit manga. The show is currently filming season two after its first became one of Netflix's most-watched programs of 2023. So hopefully, there are more goodies to come for anime fans.

Netflix's One Piece Has Reportedly Found One of Chopper's Actors https://comicbook.com/anime/news/netflix-one-piece-tony-chopper-heavy-point-actor/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 18:55:00 +0000 Megan Peters 740c490b-cb18-4b8a-bc82-ea25e6a41e96

Netflix's One Piece is gearing up for its next adventure all thanks to season two. Earlier this summer, all eyes turned to the live-action series as production began on its new season. With new cast members on board, One Piece fans are eager to learn how some faves will debut in season two. After all, guys like Tony Tony Chopper are expected to star in One Piece season two, and a new report suggests Netflix has locked in one star for the role.

And yes, we did say one of the stars playing Chopper. The character has several different forms, and when it comes to his Heavy Point, One Piece fans believe stuntman and actor Gavin Gomes will be overseeing the gig.

The information comes from the One Piece Live Action community of Discord. The page, which has sussed out several casting for the Netflix series, just dropped new information about Chopper. According to the team there, Gomes updated his acting CV recently to include work as Chopper on Netflix's One Piece. The tag has since been deleted, but the update has stirred up the fandom none the less.

After all, the introduction of Chopper is going to be key to Netflix's One Piece. Not only is the character a favorite with fans, but he is definitely not an easy figure to adapt in live-action. Chopper is a reindeer whose Devil Fruit allows him to take on a humanoid hybrid form at will. Most of the time, Chopper is a cute, chibi-centric character, but there are times when he bulks up. His Heavy Point form is one such statek, so Gomes will bring that hulking form to life. At this point, the report is unclear on whether the actor will do motion capture for Heavy Point and/or play Choppersd outright. So for now, we will have to wait and see what goes down.

If you are eager to see how Chopper joins the Straw Hat crew, well - you are in luck. Eiichiro Oda's hit manga is available on the Shonen Jump app, and as for the One Piece anime, it is streaming everywhere from Hulu to Crunchyroll and Netflix. So for more info on the live-action series, you can read its official synopsis below:

"As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer "Red-Haired" Shanks. But Luffy's life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber...at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure...one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary "One Piece," said to be the greatest treasure in the world..."

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Comes to Life With Epic Live-Action Short: Watch https://comicbook.com/anime/news/cyberpunk-edgerunners-anime-live-action-short/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 18:12:00 +0000 Megan Peters 235633a8-2ef7-4c2c-9641-ecd3ec0f5f9a

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners stands as one of the best originals on Netflix to date. Brought to life by Studio Trigger, the anime spin-off expands the world that Cyberpunk 2077 brought to life. From its rich characters to its top-tier animation, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners more than earned its title as one of Trigger's best anime. And now, the title is going viral after a group of fans adapted it in live action.

The project, as you can see below, comes courtesy of Frien Force. The YouTube channel came together to bring Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to life in a way we have never seen. The short is set within the anime's canon as it is set ahead of episode four. So if you want to see how David and Lucy fare in real life, this short does the trick.

Starring Cameron Rankin and Eric Hau, this Cyberpunk: Edgerunners short is nothing short of perfection. So if you want a rundown on the fan-film, you can read its official blurb below:

"David and Lucy have a plan to fix this bad blood between their crew and the Tyger Claws, but will it work or will they get flat-lined? It's Night City, so I wouldn't count on a happy ending..."

This adaptation of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is top notch, and it proves just how impactful the anime was. Back in 2022, Trigger and CD Projekt Red put this anime on Netflix, and the rest was history. Characters like David helped revive interest in Cyberpunk 2077 after its infamous launch. The praise gifted to Trigger's anime gave the CD Projekt Red game a new lease on life, and latter Cyberpunk 2077 titles have gone on to include cameos for the anime. It is hardly surprising to see a live-action tribute come from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and this fan-film has left netizens begging for more.

Jujutsu Kaisen Revives a Fan-Fave Sorcerer After Four Years https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jujutsu-kaisen-nobara-alive-manga-chapter-267/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 16:38:00 +0000 Megan Peters d7bf0896-b056-4e68-aa7a-34cc0e00d3b3

We're so, so back. Jujutsu Kaisen is set to end next month, and series creator Gege Akutami is ramping up the manga in celebration. We have four more chapters left to go before Yuji's journey comes to a close. Today, fans were gifted with chapter 267 in anticipation of what's to come, and the big chapter confirms the return of a fan-fave sorcerer after four years.

So please, be warned! There are major spoilers below for Jujutsu Kaisen. Read on with caution.

The whole thing came to light as Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 267 reached its halfway point. It was there fans watched as none other than the queen herself came back to life. Nobara Kugisaki is far from dead, guys. The heroine is back in action, and her powerful Resonance technique is now being used to take down Sukuna for good.

jujutsu-kaisen.png
(Photo: Shueisha)

The revelation comes five years after Nobara last appeared in Jujutsu Kaisen. The girl's journey came to a close during the Shibuya Incident arc if you will recall. In chapter 125, fans watched as Nobara faced off against Mahito, and his dreaded cursed technique got to the girl. In her final moments (or so we thought), Nobara big Yuji farewell before half of her face imploded. In the ensuing chapters, Jujutsu Kaisen never showed fans a dead body or even confirmed Nobara's death though Yuji seemed convinced of her passing. Since then, well - five years have passed without any update on the heroine. Now, Nobara is back, so it seems Shoko was able to claw the girl back from death's grip at the cost of her eye.

As you can imagine, Jujutsu Kaisen fans are happy to see the heroine back in action, but it is somewhat bittersweet. Nobara has missing from the manga for more than half its lifetime. Still, she has found a way back into the series, and Nobara seems like she'll be instrumental in defeating Sukuna. So hopefully, Team Gojo is able to pull off a victory against the King of Curses.

Want to know more about Jujutsu Kaisen? No sweat. You can find the manga on Viz Media's Shonen Jump app.

Naruto Creator Reveals His Biggest Regret for Sakura https://comicbook.com/anime/news/naruto-anime-sakura-haruno-parents-regret/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 16:03:00 +0000 Megan Peters 59cdcdc4-17e8-430b-abfd-c6e53f3497ab

Naruto has been around for decades, and these days, the series is still going on strong thanks to creator Masashi Kishimoto. With artist Mikio Ikemoto on hand, Kishimoto is continuing Naruto's legacy with a sequel that explores the next generation of the Hidden Leaf. Of course, all of our heroes from the original series are present like Team 7. And now, Kishimoto has owned up to one regret he still carries about Sakura Haruno.

And no, it isn't her feelings for Sasuke. During a recent interview with Ikemoto, Kishimoto touched upon Team 7, and it was there the series creator admitted he regrets not diving into Sakura's home life more so.

According to Kishimoto, he says he "regrets" his decision to not develop Sakura's bond with her parents. The creator did such a thing for Sasuke and Naruto as the two boys had a complex history with their families. Sadly, Sakura's home life was glossed over, and that is something Kishimoto has come to regret.

Of course, we do know a little about Sakura's parents. Her parents are none other than Kizashi and Mebuki. The two characters were never shown in the Naruto manga, but Kishimoto did introduce the pair at long last in film. Road to Ninja: Naruto the Movie featured an alternate timeline take on Sakura's parents as they were unfortunately killed in battle when the Nine-Tailed Fox attacked the Hidden Leaf. An anime episode was also released to tee up this movie, and "Road to Sakura" introduced the canon version of her parents. Mebuki came off as a serious yet loving mother while Kizashi was nothing but exuberant. So while Kishimoto did not carve out time to explore the family in the manga, he found a way to give Sakura some family time in the anime.

There is also still time for Kishimoto to bring Sakura's folks into the manga. He may not illustrate the series' sequel, but Kishimoto is the one who pens the story for Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. The sequel focuses pretty regularly on Sarada Uchiha, the daughter of Sakura and Sasuke. The girl has grandparents in Mebuki and Kizashi, so hopefully, we can see the pair visit with Sarada someday down the line.

Want to know more about Naruto? No sweat. You can find the original manga on Viz Media's Shonen Jump app, and the same goes for Naruto's sequels. So for more info on the series, you can read its official synopsis below:

"Twelve years ago the Village Hidden in the Leaves was attacked by a fearsome threat. A nine-tailed fox spirit claimed the life of the village leader, the Hokage, and many others. Today, the village is at peace and a troublemaking kid named Naruto is struggling to graduate from Ninja Academy. His goal may be to become the next Hokage, but his true destiny will be much more complicated. The adventure begins now!"

Massive Raid on Pokemon Store Uncovers $1.3 Million of Narcotics https://comicbook.com/anime/news/pokemon-cards-crime-arrest-drugs/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 15:20:00 +0000 Megan Peters 21ed8c8b-d442-4148-8a9b-794b405cc0c5

Pokemon is big business for all kinds of industries. From film to television and gaming, the IP has covered all the basis. Now, a new report from China has fans doing a double take as Pokemon just sparked a big drug bust. According to the South China Morning Post, a Pokemon shop in Hong Kong was raided recently, and it uncovered over a million dollars in narcotics.

The report confirms that the Hong Kong raid happened on August 19, and it went down at a Pokemon hobby shop. The locale, which focused on Pokemon trading cards and goods, came under fire after police encountered a 28-year-old man leaving a warehouse nearby. The man had five kilos of meth on his person, and after detaining the suspect, police were pushed to raid the Pokemon store.

It was there a hidden storage facility as discovered, and more than $1.3 million USD of commercial meth was found. By the time the raid was done, 16 kilograms of meth was found. According to police, the drugs confiscated were not being peddled to or by Pokemon fans who frequented the shop. Current investigations suggest the Pokemon shop was a simple front, and drug trafficking was kept behind closed doors.

"Storing such a large quantity of narcotics in a place where teenagers and children can visit is irresponsible and disgraceful behavior that also heightens the possible risk of teenagers and children mistakenly encountering illegal drugs," Liong Chun-Hin, the Hong Kong Narcotics Bureau Inspector, shared with the public in light of this recent arrest.

Currently, the investigation into this drug bust is ongoing, but Hong Kong authorities are confident the operation was part of a larger trafficking ring in the area. Pokemon fans shouldn't be afraid to carry on collecting and attending tournaments because of this isolated front. But honestly, headlines like this one bring a whole new meaning to gotta' catch 'em all.

Jujutsu Kaisen Announces Season Two Compilation Film https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jujutsu-kaisen-anime-movie-compilation-season-2/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 14:57:00 +0000 Megan Peters b634fbc9-59ab-4130-b7ef-35b2479c0efd

Jujutsu Kaisen is eyeing the future, and it seems the big screen is on the horizon. While the team at MAPPA Studios works on season three, the company is also taking a moment to revisit season two. A new Jujutsu Kaisen movie is in the works, after all, and it will compile the first half of season two into a film.

The announcement went live this weekend as Jujutsu Kaisen held a special festival in Japan. It was there the team confirmed a compilation movie for the Hidden Inventory and Premature Death arcs is being worked on. The compilation movie will be released in 2025, and MAPPA Studios will also release a guidebook in tandem.

For those curious about the logistics of the compilation film, this movies are hardly rare in anime. A number of TV anime series eventually head to theaters thanks to this medium. Compilation films are released to condense anime arcs into digestible bits. From Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba to One Piece, a ton of big-name shonen titles have posted compilation films before, and now Jujutsu Kaisen is joining in on the fun.

For the team at MAPPA, this Jujutsu Kaisen movie isn't the only compilation piece it has on deck. Not long ago, the studio confirmed plans to release a compilation film for Attack on Titan's final two specials. The movie, which is called Attack on Titan: Last Attack, is expected to hit Japan next year. So for now, we will have to see whether these compilation projects are screened stateside.

If you want to watch Jujutsu Kaisen season two as is, the anime is easy to find online. The show is streaming on Hulu as well as Crunchyroll. So for more info on the supernatural series, you can read its official synopsis below:

It has been fifteen years since the original Steins;Gate game introduced the time-traveling world to anime fans and gamers alike. Since its initial debut, the series was given a handful of anime adaptations and games that examined the human psyche and saw an eclectic cast of characters attempting to wrap their minds around the concept of time travel. To celebrate the original visual novel's release that started it all, Steins;Gate hasn't just released a new key visual that brings together the beloved cast but is also planning an event this fall that will bring together the cast members to help relive the beloved franchise.

Steins;Gate One World is an event that will help ring in the milestone for the anime franchise. While no new projects have been announced that will bring back the likes of Rintaro, Mayuri, and Seki to the forefront, it's clear that the series till holds a special place amongst fans of the games and anime series. Scheduled for October 27th in Matsudo Chiba, the event is planning on bringing several cast members back for a reunion. The cast members returning include Mamoru Miyano (Rintaro), Kana Hanazawa (Mayuri), Tomokazu Seki (Itaru), Asami Imai (Kurisu), Saori Goto (Moeka), Yu Kobayashi (Luka) and Haruko Momoi (Rumiho).

Steins;Gate Returns

The last anime project in the Steins;Gate universe was Steins;Gate Zero, which arrived in 2018 from Studio White Fox. Like many other universes in pop culture these days, the anime fan-favorite was more than willing to dive head first into the multiverse.

If you want to dive into the world of Steins;Gate, Crunchyroll houses both the original series and the latest anime release, Steins;Gate Zero. Here's how the streaming service describes the mind-bending franchise, "Steins; Gate follows an eclectic group of individuals who have the ability to send text messages to the past. However throughout their experimentation process, an organization named SERN who has been doing their own research on time travel tracks them down. Now it's a careful game of cat and mouse to not get caught and moreover, try to survive."

Ranma 1/2 Reboot Reveals Release Date, Streaming Platform https://comicbook.com/anime/news/ranma-1-2-reboot-release-date/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 20:36:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 7129582a-24bb-4fab-9232-04b11c04f7be

Rumiko Takahashi has been one of the most prolific creators in the anime world for decades. Some of her most well-known properties include Inuyasha, Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, Mao, and Mermaid Saga. Most recently, her anime franchise, Urusei Yatsura, received an anime reboot that gave the story of Lum and her cast a makeover for the first time in years. This fall, the same will be true of Ranma Saotome as Ranma 1/2 is getting a revival. Along with a release date for the new take on the anime classic, the streaming platform has been announced to let fans know where they can dive back into the gender-swapping world.

For this Ranma reboot, Studio MAPPA will be taking the reins on the classic series. The initial anime outing was created in 1989 and was brought to life by Studio Deen. MAPPA has become very well known in the anime world in recent years thanks to its work on series including Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Hell's Paradise to name a few. This October, fans will have the opportunity to see how the production house will breathe new life into one of Takahashi's greatest works.

Ranma 1/2's Release Date

The Ranma 1/2 reboot will arrive on Netflix beginning on October 5th. Rather than dumping all of the episodes on the streaming service at once, Netflix plans to release episodes weekly. While the project might be a reboot, the series is bringing back several cast members from the original including Kappei Yamaguchi as Ranma Saotome, Megumi Hayashibara as the female Ranma, Noriko Hidaka as Akane Tendo, Minami Takayama as Nabiki Tendo, Kikuko Inoue as Kasumi Tendo, Koichi Yamadera as Ryoga Hibiki, and Rei Sakuma as Shampoo.

If you need a refresher on the story of the classic anime, here's Studio MAPPA's official description of the gender-swapping story of Ranma 1/2, "Ranma Saotome and Akane Tendo of Tendo Dojo are betrothed to each other by their parents. But Ranma faces a unique problem...Ever since he fell into the cursed springs of Jusenkyo while training in China, his body has acquired the peculiar trait of transforming into a girl when doused with cold water and reverting to a boy with hot water. Get ready for the slapstick, action-packed rom-com featuring Ranma, Akane, and a vibrant cast of unique characters!"

My Hero Academia Creator Inks Shoji's Best Sketch Yet https://comicbook.com/anime/news/my-hero-academia-creator-kohei-horikosh-new-shoji-art/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 18:15:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 66126870-d1ea-49dc-ad7d-1c51c26999d5

My Hero Academia's manga has already come to an end but Kohei Horikoshi isn't done with the superhero shonen franchise by a long shot. With the anime adaptation continuing to play catch up with its source material, the mangaka is still supplying new art to celebrate new episodes. UA Academy's latest episode featured Tentacole and Anima are trying their best to take down Spinner and an army of Heteromorphs aiming to take down Hero Society. In examining Shoji's past, Kohei Horikoshi honored the anime by drawing a new take on Tentacole and a young girl who had a major impact on the young hero.

Tentacole has his work cut out for him in My Hero Academia's final battle as Spinner is not the villain that anime fans once knew. Shigaraki's best friend was more than willing to take the Quirks that were offered to him by All For One. Spinner was given two major superpowers in "Body Bulk" and "Scale Mail" which have made the formerly smaller antagonist look far different than how he once looked. With Spinner leading an army that's 15,000 strong, the two hundred heroes and police officers have their work cut out for them.

My Hero Academia: Shoji The MVP

The latest episode of the anime didn't just focus on Shoji taking on Spinner, but it also dove into Tentacole's background. Like many other heteromorphs in Hero Society, Mozu found himself ostracized from his community thanks to his appearance. Despite this fact, Tentacole was more than willing to help out those in need, saving a young girl who was being swept away by a turbulent stream. In Kohei Horikoshi's new art, the manga artist shares a new take on Shoji along with the little girl he saved earlier in his life.

While My Hero Academia's manga ended, the anime adaptation most likely has one more season on the way before it does the same. Based on the events of the source material, season eight might be the grand finale of the anime series and bring the final battle to a close. Needless to say, Shoji and Koda will play a big role in the anime episodes to come.

Gundam's Virtual Reality Movie Announces Release Date https://comicbook.com/anime/news/gundam-virtual-reality-movie-release-date/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 16:45:00 +0000 Evan Valentine a4955b7b-2ef0-4781-afd7-465d9f4758d3

Since the late 1970s, the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise has been a stalwart part of the anime world. The series has managed to stay in the public eye not just thanks to its striking mech designs but with its willingness to create countless new stories that involved the mech suits. Such is the case with the next movie that is set to arrive in the franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom. While the movie won't be hitting the silver screen, it is taking the Gundam franchise to a brand new avenue as the upcoming movie will be in virtual reality. Here is when you can expect the Gundam series to hit the virtual reality world.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom will arrive on virtual reality platforms including Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3 on October 4th worldwide. It will retail for around $17.99 USD when it lands this fall and has shared a new trailer to give anime fans an idea of what they are in for. In Silver Phantom, viewers will take on the role of the protagonist in a movie that blends its story with some video game elements.

Gundam's Silver Phantom Trailer

For the virtual reality film, Silver Phantom is bringing in several creators who are familiar with the Gundam franchise. Director Kenichi Suzuki previously worked on Gundam Evolve, script writer Ryoji Sekinishi previously worked on Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury, Character Designer Tsukasa Kotobuki previously worked on Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, and Mechanical Designer Mika Akitaka previously worked on Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ.

If you want to learn more about the virtual reality experience involving the classic anime mechs, here's how Bandai Namco describes the next movie in the Gundam franchise, "Argent Kiel, an unofficial mercenary organization that belongs to neither the Eatrh Federation nor Zeon, was contracted to assassinate a high-ranking Federation official, Azami Meghigne. The request came from the Earth Federation Forces, which was unable to make public the existence of Azami, who held a secret communication with Zeon. But just before the mission, their fleet was attacked by none other than the Earth Federation Forces' Jegan squadron. In the midst of the chaos, a silver Gundam secretly owned by Argent Kiel is released into space."

Berserk Announces U.S. Return With Dark Horse https://comicbook.com/anime/news/berserk-dark-horse-us-return-release-window/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 16:19:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 53a5f14f-f193-4781-86c5-62345f45efda

Berserk has continued on following the tragic passing of creator Kentaro Miura, thanks to friends of the manga artist in Koji Mori and the artists at Studio Gaga. Using conversations and outlines created by the deceased manga artist, Guts' journey of revenge and survival has continued with new manga chapters. As manga readers wait for the next chapter to arrive, Dark Horse Entertainment had a special announcement for fans at this year's Anime NYC. Guts, Griffith, and Casca are receiving a new manga volume that is coming to North America and Dark Horse has shared when fans can expect the 42nd volume to land in the West.

While Berserk's manga has continued, there has been no word on when we can expect a new anime adaptation to be created. The last time we saw the Band of the Hawk on the small screen, it was thanks to Berserk: Memorial Edition. This specific television series took old and new footage from the trilogy of Berserk films and cut them together into a new series. With there remaining plenty of battles and events from the manga that have yet to be animated, fan animators have recently taken matters into their own hands with projects of their own to bring some of these scenes to life.

Berserk's North American Return

Here's how Dark Horse Comics describes the 42nd volume of Berserk that will make its way to the United States in March of next year, "The shocking appearance of Griffith on Elf Island has provoked rage and terror in Guts and Casca...and carved a rift into the enchanted isle itself, setting loose a corrosive horde of devourers from beneath the earth! If the Black Swordsman cannot rely upon even his legendary blade, then escape by ship seems the only hope for survival...but not everyone is leaving Elf Island together!"

The previous volume of the manga arrived in North America in 2021, meaning its been several years since Berserk fans were able to get an official manga volume following the Black Swordsman. Despite having no running anime series at the moment, the Band of The Hawk will still have a major place in the anime world for years to come.

My Hero Academia Gives Spinner a Venomous Makeover https://comicbook.com/anime/news/my-hero-academia-season-seven-spinner-venom-transformation/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 15:30:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 1fd92329-22f5-495a-9b49-c841da3472cf

While Deku and Shigaraki might be the main "card" of My Hero Academia's seventh season, there are far more fights that are taking place in the battle for Hero Society's future. One of the biggest has recently taken place in the latest anime episode as Spinner leads an army of Heteremorphs in a bid to free Kurogiri and get revenge for the terrible treatment they've all received. Standing in Spinner's way are both Shoji and Koda, the two Class 1-A members who don't look all that human. Thanks to All For One, Spinner has some venomish tricks up his sleeves.

In the world of UA Academy, Heteremorphs are those whose Quirks change their appearance to the point where they might be ostracized from society. Spinner is a prime candidate for the harassment as the young villain found himself pushed into the arms of All For One and Shigaraki. Suffering from degradation and sometimes violence, the lizard-like villain has gone from being a hermit to a leader in the villain's army. To prepare Spinner for the battle ahead, All For One has given him two Quirks that make him look like a certain Marvel symbiote.

Spinner's Venomous Transformation

The two Quirks that Spinner received were "Body Bulk" and "Scale Mail". While the former Quirk increased Spinner's size, strength, and speed multiple times over, it was in the latter Quirk that viewers were able to witness the true terror of these powers. Spinner now has a suit of armor that is wrapped around his body and has a tongue and appearance that makes him look like Eddie Brock on a bady day as the anime villain puts his powers to good use.

Unfortunately for Shoji and Koda, they were unable to halt Spinner's march toward freeing the teleporting Kurogiri. On top of the venomous villain, All For One's heteromorph army is 15,000 strong and has an ax to grind with a society that hates and fears them. With Spinner now having a suit of armor and some serious strength to back up his cause, things are looking dire for Koda, Shoji, and the heroes attempting to pave a bright future.

Fate/Stay: Night Announces Honkai: Star Rail Collab With Anime Short https://comicbook.com/anime/news/fate-stay-night-honkai-star-rail-collab-watch/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 21:44:00 +0000 Evan Valentine b1df6e7e-f9ca-4c8a-bcf4-1c9eb961cec3

The Hoyoverse has become a major player in the video game scene. Along with Honkai: Star Rail, the producers have created the likes of Genshin Impact, Zenless Zone Zero, and Honkai Impact. While Honkai: Star Rail has yet to announce that it will receive its own anime adaptation, like Genshin Impact has, the game is taking the opportunity to cross over into the anime world next year. The riders of the space-faring train are set to share an adventure with participants of the "Holy Grail War" as a collaboration featuring Honkai:Star Rail and Fate/Stay Night has been announced.

Honkai: Star Rail first arrived on gaming platforms last year, introduced as a "free to play" video game that uses a "gacha" model that has players looking to collect characters to accomplish varying tasks across the fictional universe. While the Star Rail residents haven't been confirmed to receive their own anime series, the aesthetic of the game certainly makes it look as though it was ripped straight from an anime franchise.

Honkai Stay/Night

Here's how Honkai: Star Rail describes the upcoming crossover, "In the wake of the recent Xianzhou odyssey, the latest trailer at gamescom features Feixiao, The Xianzhou Yaoqing's Merlin's Claw and one of the Seven Arbiter-Generals. Furthermore, additional revelations concerning the intriguing collaboration with the Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works] anime have been unveiled, with Archer's astonishing arrival aboard the Astral Express, a development that shocks Pom-pom and the crew members, and foreshadows the extraordinary journey that lies ahead."

If you haven't seen Fate/Stay Night's anime adaptation, it is available to stream on Crunchyroll before the game collaboration arrives. Here's how the streaming service describes the anime, "Fuyuki City--a city surrounded by the ocean and the mountains becomes the setting for an age-old ritual. To realize the mythical Holy Grail, which is said to grant any wish from its possessor, seven masters are given seven heroic spirits chosen by the Grail... Each master will enter into a contract with their assigned servants and battle the other masters and servants to the death until only one pair remains... This is the "Holy Grail War."

Plus-Sized Elf Releases Live-Action Trailer https://comicbook.com/anime/news/plus-sized-elf-live-action-trailer/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 21:13:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 01ba35be-82a7-4180-b7cd-c3207f39abc2

Anime might have its fair share of earth-shattering battles and romantic comedies but the medium will often venture into brand new paths that might not work in other avenues. Plus-Sized Elf is a recent anime series that follows Elfuda as she attempts to lose weight in a bid to return to her own world. Recently beginning this summer, the anime adaptation of the series has become successful enough that it has both drawn in plenty of viewers along with receiving a wild new trailer. No live-action Plus-Sized Elf project has been confirmed but that didn't stop the series from creating its own live-action commercial.

Plus-Sized Elf first arrived, like so many other anime series, as a manga. Creator Synecdoche weaved a mind-bending story that is wholly unique from many other properties in the anime world. As mentioned earlier, there's no live-action project in the works for Elfuda though it would be in good company. The likes of One Piece, Cowboy Bebop, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, and many more tried their hands out in the live-action game and there are sure to be many more to come.

Plus-Sized Elf in Live Action

The current voice cast for Plus-Sized Elf includes the likes of Ayasa Ito as Elfuda, Takahide Ishii as Tomoatsu Naoe, Rena Hasegawa as Kuroeda, Ayaka Fukuhara as Oga, Miyu Kubota as Kusahanada, Sora Tokui as Meru, Madoka Asahina as Raika, Aya Uchida as Oku & Akiho Ino, Kotori Koiwai as Kobo, Yuka Iguchi as Sateru, Kaori Maeda as Honeda, Aino Shimada as Gonda, and Mikoi Sasaki as Hitome.

If you haven't had the chance to check out Plus-Sized Elf, the anime is available to stream exclusively on HIDIVE. Here's how the streaming service describes the surreal series, "Naoe-kun, a massage therapist, is about to head home for the day when he's saddled with a rather strange patient. This lovely lady has emerald eyes, pointy ears, and grew up in the forest--everything about her screams 'elf,' except for one thing: her bodacious body. It turns out she left her world but loves junk food in this one, and now her obsession has caught up with her. Can Naoe-kun help this loveable elf girl lose the weight--and keep it off?"

Jujutsu Kaisen Cosplay Blows Minds With Kejaku https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jujutsu-kaisen-cosplay-scary-kejaku-brain/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 19:08:00 +0000 Evan Valentine a7d09f58-2ff7-4176-b42c-d6755a7b4dd3

The Shibuya Incident Arc featured plenty of deaths when it came to Jujutsu Kaisen's cast of supernatural energy users and the vast majority met their demise thanks to Suguru Geto's machinations. While the big bad of season two had a plan in mind to take Gojo off the board, it didn't involve killing the blindfold-wearing teacher. Locking the Jujutsu Tech sensei within the Prison Realm, Geto was able to put his plan into motion for both Shibuya and the upcoming Culling Game. Now, one cosplayer has brought both Geto and his "friend" Kenjaku to life thanks to some pitch-perfect cosplay.

One of the biggest shocks of Jujutsu Kaisen's second season was the reveal that Suguru Geto had in fact died thanks to the events of the prequel movie Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Dying at the hands of his friend Gojo, the anime series saw Geto somehow mysteriously return though he had a scar along the top of his forehead. During the events of the Shibuya Incident Arc, Suguru revealed himself to Satoru, shocking him for long enough to entrap him within the Prison Realm. Before Gojo was confined, Geto revealed that he was not in fact "Suguru Geto" but was instead the villainous Kenjaku, an ancient antagonist that jumped from body to body in a bid to gain immortality.

Kenjaku Rises

Kenjaku's big reveal in Jujutsu Kaisen was one of the shonen's biggest and most disgusting moments, as "Geto" would pop off the top of his head to prove his true identity. While Geto and Kenjaku aren't the same person, their goals have aligned somewhat as Kenjaku has been looking to create a world where cursed energy users reign supreme above humanity. In an effort to accomplish this, the Culling Game was created which will be a big part of the anime's third season.

Kenjaku - Jujutsu Kaisen
by u/Jester_Privilege in cosplay

Studio MAPPA quickly confirmed that a third season for Jujutsu Kaisen was in the works, though there has yet to be a release date for Yuji Itadori's return. As bleak as the Shibuya Incident Arc was, Yuji will have some major new threats to deal with. As the manga prepares to come to an end, there are still some major events that will hit the small screen.

Universal Studios Hypes Halloween With New Pokemon Collaboration https://comicbook.com/anime/news/pokemon-halloween-universal-studios-collaboration/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 18:10:00 +0000 Evan Valentine e8b7db07-84d3-42e0-a72f-51749a69fe76

The Pokemon series has introduced anime and video game fans alike to over one thousand pocket monsters since trainers first set out to become Pokemon trainers. Of these many creatures, there have been more than a few that are quite spooky. Ghost Pokemon like Gengar, Haunter, Misdreavus, Chadelure, and many others are primed to take over Halloween each year. Now, Universal Studios Japan has revealed its plans for the spooky season as a Pokemon Halloween event will take place at the locale that routinely features anime attractions and events.

Theme Parks will routinely celebrate the spooky season each year, with Disney Parks and Universal Studios in North America doing so annually. With Disney, the theme parks will routinely host events such as "Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party" and the "Oogie Boogie Bash". For Universal Studios in the West, Halloween Horror Nights will create attractions based on properties such as Ghostbusters, A Quiet Place, Insidious, and the Universal Monsters. Pokemon won't be the only Halloween attraction in Universal Studios Japan, as the park will also feature an attraction focusing on Chainsaw Man and his devilish world.

Pokemon's Halloween Extravaganza

Fans hoping to take part in the Pokemon Halloween Party in Japan will have from September 5th to November 4th to check out the event itself. The "Sunset Show" will take place from October 14th to November 4th, so keep that in mind if you're looking to catch the full display. Unfortunately, there has been no word on this Pokemon event hopping the seas and making its way to North America.

Here's how Universal Studios Japan describes the Pokemon Halloween collaboration that will arrive later this year, "This year, the most fun Halloween party with DJ Pikachu & DJ Gengar and ghost-type Pok?mon will be held again! Everyone will clap and jump together to the super exciting original music by DECO*27 and music arranged with familiar Pok?mon sounds! Release the energy of your mind and body and the voltage will reach MAX! Get excited at the super hot party where everyone is the star! There will also be a "sunset show" with exciting lighting to get you in the mood even more!"

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Reveals Japanese Cast https://comicbook.com/anime/news/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim-japanese-cast/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 17:38:00 +0000 Evan Valentine ce290d60-e3ad-41a7-92d1-6a691ccc97d1

The Lord of The Rings: The War of The Rohirrim will be the first time in years that Middle Earth has been featured on the silver screen. While Amazon prepares to revisit the likes of Mordor later this year for The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power's second season, The War of The Rohirrim will be the first time that Middle Earth has received an anime event. Since the upcoming animated film will be made in Japan, it should come as no surprise that the movie will receive its own Japanese dub and Warner Bros has shared the actors that will help bring it to life.

When it comes to the Japanese cast, The War of The Rohirrim has announced that Masachika Ichimura will take on the role of Helm Hammerhand, Fuka Koshiba will play Hera, Kejiro Tsuda will play Wulf, Takako Honda will place Olwin, Manabu Muraji will play the Orc Lot, and Hayato Taya will play Reef. For the English Dub, The Lord of The Rings anime has confirmed the likes of Brian Cox, Gaia Wise, Luke Pasqualino, and Miranda Otto will make up the cast.

The War of The Rohirrim Japanese Trailer

In an interview earlier this year, The War of The Rohirrim's director Kenji Kamiya explained why having a female protagonist in the anime film was a necessity, "In Japanese animation, it's not uncommon for a female protagonist to be the main character, but it's more rare in the live-action films made from The Lord of the Rings. Our film has a strong female lead in H?ra, and our story is narrated by the noble Tolkien figure ?owyn, so women are very well represented. I think there are a lot of fans who really like Tolkien's original work, so I hope those people will enjoy it. Making this movie has been a fun challenge."

If you want a closer look at The Lord of The Rings' anime that takes place long before Frodo and Bilbo went on their unique journeys in Middle Earth, here's how Warner Bros describes the upcoming movie, "Set 183 years before the events of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, The War of the Rohirrim tells the story of Helm Hammerhand, a legendary king of Rohan, and his family as they defend their kingdom against an army of Dunlendings. Helm goes on to be the namesake for the stronghold Helm's Deep."

Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom Reveals North American Release Date https://comicbook.com/anime/news/overlord-the-sacred-kingdom-us-release-date/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 17:02:00 +0000 Evan Valentine c2477124-6787-44ff-8a35-b11e03cd2310

The Isekai genre continues to heat up as each passing year sees more Isekai television series and movies arrive for hungry anime fans. Of the many Isekai properties that have received anime adaptations, Overlord has earned its place as one of the biggest. The tale of Ain Ooal Gown sees a random video game player transported into his digital world, taking on the role of his villainous character as he attempts to navigate the landscape with some godly abilities at his beck and call. Netting four anime seasons, Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom brings the Isekai characters to the silver screen and North American fans should prepare for their arrival this year.

Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom will arrive in North America on November 8th, with Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures teaming up to see the Skeleton Wizard in theaters. At present, the Isekai hasn't confirmed whether there will be a season five but the original light novel series has continued to release new chapters to this day. Should Overlord want to continue its anime adaptation in the future, there is plenty of material to pull from.

If you want to learn more about Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom, here's how Studio Madhouse describes the upcoming Isekai film, "After twelve years of playing his favorite MMORPG game, Momonga logs in for the last time only to find himself transported into its world playing it indefinitely. Throughout his adventures, his avatar ascends to the title of Sorcerer King Ains Ooal Gown. Once prosperous but now on the brink of ruin, The Sacred Kingdom enjoyed years of peace after construction of an enormous wall protecting them from neighboring invasions. But, one day this comes to an end when the Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth arrives with an army of villainous demi-humans."

The synopsis continues with, "Fearing invasion of their own lands, the neighboring territory of the Slane Theocracy is forced to beg their enemies at the Sorcerer Kingdom for help. Heeding the call, Momonga, now known as the Sorcerer King Ains Ooal Gown, rallies the Sorcerer Kingdom and its undead army to join the fight alongside the Sacred Kingdom and the Slane Theocracy in hopes to defeat the Demon Emperor."

Terminator Zero Showrunner Explains Why The Anime Needed to be Different https://comicbook.com/anime/news/terminator-zero-showrunner-anime-movie-differences/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 16:35:00 +0000 Evan Valentine d57ca1f8-11ad-44f4-a344-318a1285b26a

Terminator Zero will arrive on Netflix on August 29th, with Production I.G. teaming up with the streaming service to focus on new aspects of the fight against Skynet. One of the biggest changes the first Terminator anime has been touting is the idea that the Connor family won't be in the series. Routinely, the films will focus on Sarah and/or John Connor as they fight against the mechanical hordes of Skynet, so Terminator Zero taking a different route is a surprise for many. In a recent interview, showrunner Mattson Tomlin broke down the changes that helped forge the upcoming Terminator anime.

In chatting with the outlet Polygon, Tomlin addressed taking on a Terminator project that didn't have the Connors in the spotlight, "Was it a challenge? No, not really. I think that the movies have been doing the Connors for a long time, and in doing this show, I really wanted to respect the incredible artists that had worked on this franchise before me, and that's going from the first movie all the way through the last movie." In the latest movie of the Terminator series, the franchise made a wild decision in seeing John Connor killed following the events of Terminator 2 as Terminator: Dark Fate flipped the script on the franchise.

Terminator in Japan

Tomlin then took the opportunity to explain why the upcoming Production I.G. anime will take place in Japan, "All of the movies have taken place in the States. They've all taken place on the U.S.-Mexico border for the most part. And yeah, it's been about this family and this saga, but I'm doing an animated show and that hasn't been done before in this franchise. Then on top of that, I'm working with partners in Japan, and I wanted to lean into that strength, so it suddenly dawned on me, we don't know what's going on in Japan. Like, there's no mention anywhere in the franchise about what's going on really anywhere else in the world. OK, like, Russia launches their nukes, got it.. But then what's going on anywhere else in the world?"

Tomlin then shared his thoughts on the Terminator franchise as a whole and where Zero fits in, "That first movie is a love story about a man and a woman making a baby, because that baby is very important, but in the context of the movie, it's just, Here's a couple coming together and then that second movie is a story about a mother's love for her son, and meanwhile, there's [this] surrogate father who's come in, who has the face of the guy who tried to kill her before, and she has to reconcile what that means. And so I think, for Terminator Zero, it was important to make sure that we had killer robots, the nuclear apocalypse, and a family story that really had dramatic weight. That, for me, is what Terminator is."

Netflix's One Piece. Charithra Chandra Breaks Silence on Vivi Casting https://comicbook.com/anime/news/one-piece-netflix-live-action-vivi-comments/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 16:01:00 +0000 Evan Valentine aeacbe98-e6f9-4824-98d8-6eb9a9c796b3

One of the most anticipated characters to arrive in One Piece's live-action second season is Princess Vivi. The daughter of King Cobra and Princess of Alabasta is an essential figure in the Straw Hats' journey so making an appearance in the Netflix series was a foregone conclusion. Following the casting of Cobra, Dr. Kureha, and Dr. Hirilu, the streaming service confirmed that Charinthra Chandra will be taking on the role of the blue-haired royal. To follow the announcement, Chandra herself has released a new video that comments on joining the cast and her future as a part of the Grand Line.

If you're unfamiliar with Charinthra Chandra's body of work, she's been in some high profile series in the past. Most notably, she played a significant role in Netflix's Bridgerton and took on a starring role in the film How To Date Billy Walsh. Ironically enough, Chandra has also had a role in the anime world as she voiced a character in the Disney+ anime original series, Star Wars: Visions. Princess Vivi might not have any devil fruit powers but you might not know it when it comes to her ferocity in protecting the people of Alabasta from threats foreign and domestic.

The Live-Action Vivi Speaks

Charinthra had this to say following the announcement that she would be playing a major role in One Piece's second live-action season, "Hey guys, I am so excited to be joining the cast of One Piece and I feel incredibly grateful to Oda-Sensei for trusting me with the role of Vivi. I know how much she means to all of you and I am going to work my hardest to do her justice and make you all proud. See you soon!"

While Cobra and the doctors of Drum Island have been cast, along with Vivi, there are still some major character announcements that One Piece fans are waiting for. With season two seemingly following the source material, it means that the likes of Crocodile, Nico Robin, and Tony Tony Chopper will appear, meaning there are some big casting announcements for the live-action anime adaptation set to land in the future.

Look Back Announces U.S. Release Date https://comicbook.com/anime/news/look-back-anime-us-release-date/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 15:29:00 +0000 Evan Valentine e22f9edf-4d29-450b-873d-5410f9781422

Tatsuki Fujimoto might be best known for creating the bloody shonen series Chainsaw Man but Denji's story is far from the only manga that the artist is responsible for. Look Back is far different from the world of devils as it follows two young aspiring manga creators and how their relationship is forged thanks to their love of the medium itself. While the anime movie has been in Japanese theaters for several weeks, North American anime fans have been waiting to see if they will have the chance to catch Fujino and Kyomoto's unique story. Luckily, GKids is partnering with Studio Durian to bring Look Back to the West.

Look Back is actually the first anime film for Studio Durian, the production house that was created by animator Oshiyama. Taking on the role of the director of this heart-wrenching movie, Oshiyama has experience working on Studio Ghibli's The Boy And The Heron and the anime adaptation of Chainsaw Man. In an interview earlier this year, the director explained the unique animation style used in animating Fujino and Kyomoto.

"The key animation only draws the key points of movement, and the animation fills in the gaps. The lines drawn by the key animator are somewhat rough, so the animation artist cleans them up into neat lines. Normally, the lines drawn by the key animator don't appear on the screen as is. This time, the key animator's rough drawings are sent directly to the finishing touches and colored. The key animation is reflected on the screen as is as animation. I think one of the reasons why many people think, 'this work is different' is that we retained a hand-drawn feel."

Look Back's US Release Date

GKIDS has announced that Western anime fans can expect Look Back to hit U.S. theaters on October 4th. If you haven't caught the trailer for the successful anime movie, you can check it out below.

If you want to learn more about Look Back, here's an official description of the movie that was born from the mind of mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto, "Popular, outgoing Fujino is celebrated by her classmates for her funny comics in the class newspaper. One day, her teacher asks her to share the space with Kyomoto, a truant recluse whose beautiful artwork sparks a competitive fervor in Fujino. What starts as jealousy transforms when Fujino realizes their shared passion for drawing." The film "captures the highs and lows of pursuing artistic excellence and the special bonds formed through creative collaboration."

Netflix Shares New Animation Trailer For Arcane, Gundam, Terminator Zero And More https://comicbook.com/anime/news/netflix-animation-trailer-arcane-gundam-terminator-watch/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 15:01:00 +0000 Evan Valentine bb9f0a5a-ac62-4913-a068-8118dc146999

The anime medium is only growing in popularity and streaming services have taken notice. Netflix is a prime example of a platform that is not only creating original animated series but it is also forging new properties in the anime game. To give fans an idea of what is arriving on Netflix in the animation department in 2024 and beyond, the streaming service has released a new trailer that shares old and new footage of some highly anticipated series. As the streaming wars continue to heat up, expect more of a focus on the animation world across the board.

When it comes to newly released anime adaptations on Netflix, Kengan Ashura has dropped its new season for fans of the brutal fighting franchise. Earlier this year, the brawlers of this anime did something extremely unexpected as the streaming service pit Kengan Ashura's warriors against Baki Hanma and his anime comrades. While the hour-long special had its fair share of brawls, the main fight left things at a draw between the two stars of the hard-hitting franchises. Viewers might never get a true answer as to who is the strongest between Baki and Ohma Tokita but it goes to show how willing Netflix is to step outside of the box when it comes to anime.

Netflix: The Future of Animation

Alongside the trailer featuring new animation for some of Netflix's biggest animated series, the footage also breaks down release dates for several of the upcoming properties. Here's a breakdown of what the trailer revealed:

Terminator Zero - August 29th
Twilight of The Gods - September 19th
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft - October 10th
Gundam: Requiem For Vengeance - October 17th
Arcane Season 2 - November
Beastars Final Season Part 1 - December
Sakamoto Days - January 2025

Netflix picking up Sakamoto Days as an exclusive goes to show how serious the streaming service has become in the anime game. With major shonen franchises like Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, and One Piece having either concluded or on their way to their grand finales, the story of Taro Sakamoto is in a prime position to be an even bigger mover and shaker in Weekly Shonen Jump.

Live-Action One Piece Season 2 - What to Know

The cast from the first season will be returning for their respective roles, and new additions to the cast also joining for the new season include the likes of Daniel Lasker as Mr. 9, Camrus Johnson as Mr. 5, Jazzara Jaslyn as Miss Valentine, David Dastmalchian as Mr. 3, Clive Russell as Crocus, Werner Coetser as Dorry, Brendan Murray as Brogy, Callum Kerr as Smoker, Julia Rehwald as Tashigi, Rob Colletti as Wapol, and Ty Keogh as Dalton.

The first season of the live-action One Piece series is now streaming with Netflix, and they tease what to expect from it as such, "Based on Japan's highest-selling manga series in history by Eiichiro Oda, ONE PIECE is a legendary high-seas adventure unlike any other. Monkey D. Luffy is a young adventurer who has longed for a life of freedom since he can remember. Luffy sets off from his small village on a perilous journey to find the legendary fabled treasure, ONE PIECE, to become King of the Pirates! Netflix's One Piece has found their Vivi for Season 2 of the live-action series! Netflix's One Piece Season 2 has been confirmed to be tackling some major arcs coming next from Eiichiro Oda's original manga series, and fans have seen these arcs coming together with the first few casting announcements revealing many of the new faces we'll be meeting in the coming episodes. But while there are a few faces fans wanted to see, there were still a few main players that had yet to be revealed as production and filming on One Piece Season 2 gets underway.

One Piece series creator Eiichiro Oda previously teased fans that there would be new casting announcements soon that helped to fill in those gaps of characters fans have been anxiously awaiting to see. Now we're one step closer to the new episodes' premiere as Netflix has officially announced that Charithra Chandran will be joining the cast as Vivi in One Piece Season 2. They'll be alongside the main crew and play a much bigger role that might be expected in the arcs and future episodes to come!

One Piece Season 2 - What to Know

Netflix's One Piece has yet to announce a release date for Season 2 as of the time of this publication, but Oda confirmed that the new season will be tackling the Loguetown, Reverse Mountain (Twin Cape), Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island arcs.

But in order to find the ultimate prize, Luffy will need to assemble the crew he's always wanted before finding a ship to sail, searching every inch of the vast blue seas, outpacing the Marines, and outwitting dangerous rivals at every turn."

Rick and Morty: The Anime Episode 2 Recap With Spoilers https://comicbook.com/anime/news/rick-and-morty-the-anime-episode-2-recap-spoilers/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 04:30:00 +0000 Nick Valdez 066c55c7-f330-4af5-a66d-767c6c88ec5b

Rick and Morty: The Anime is now in action with its new episodes through the rest of the Summer, and Episode 2 brought even more of the characters into the fold. Rick and Morty: The Anime introduced a whole new side of the multiverse with its first episode as it not only brought the titular duo into the world of anime, but shook things up even further with the introduction of new characters and more. As Rick and Morty: The Anime continues to tell its original story, we'll be seeing even more of the characters join the anime in the future.

Rick and Morty: The Anime debuted its story with a Rick who was already messing with space and time, and due to a new device, had thus lost himself within the multiverse. It was an even odder situation for Morty as while in a VR game, he was experiencing multiple possible lives across many different universes. All the while the greater mystery for the anime continued to grow, and that's even more so with the new introductions seen in the latest entry. Read on for everything important that happens in Rick and Morty: The Anime Episode 2, "Fighting Mother."

Rick and Morty: The Anime Episode 2 Recap With Spoilers

  • Rick is twisting around through space to get back to his dimension (while Summer still tracks him as seen in the premiere) before he suddenly crosses paths with another Rick flying in the opposite direction. All of a sudden, multiple other Ricks arrive in their ships and Summer loses track of Rick in the chaos. Worried, Summer calls Space Beth and she decides to help when many of the other Ricks also cross paths with the decoy Rick they've been keeping track of within the Galactic Federation.
  • Rick is suddenly transported to a new dimension, which turns out to be another Rick's dimension before he leaves the Smith Family behind. Rick decides to confront this other Rick and says he's the one who created the time entropy device from the first episode. Meanwhile, Space Beth sneaks onto the Galactic Federation ship where Decoy Rick is being held and is confronted by Tammy, who's since become a half-robotic warrior like PhoenixPerson in the main series.
  • The second Rick (who's difference is notable due to his longer hair) then reveals that the Rick we've been following is actually C-137 Rick, and stole the life and family of this other Rick. Rick C-137 explains that while he saved his current Beth's life, he also let his own Beth and Diane die. He wishes he would've been the one to create the portal gun, and the other Rick realizes that now they need to fight it out.
  • Meanwhile, Morty is confirmed to have been pulled out of the VR game at the end of the first episode. Summer calls Space Beth, who gets into a fight with PhoenixTammy and wins. Before she delivers the final blow, Decoy Rick explodes. Space Beth decides to spare PhoenixTammy, and tells her that she knows what it's like to have kids, and this seems to take PhoenixTammy by surprise. So she decides to escape from the exploding ship so they can fight another day.
  • The two Ricks begin fighting one another, and their fight takes them through dimensions without the use of a portal gun. They suspect is that their dimensional energies are clashing and subsequently being annihilated, which leaves a mass of explosive energy in the world they were previously in (which gets the United States President's attention). The Ricks fight once more as it's the only way they can get to other dimensions at this time.
  • As they fight and go through different dimensions, the longer haired Rick (who was also seen during the premiere) says he didn't create the time entropy device either but instead had already used it (which Rick C-137 suspects reset his world). While they fight across time and space, the world's various governments try and make their way to the massive energy source they left behind. It eventually fades away, and the President decides to give up when he's shot down.
  • The two Ricks punch each other so hard that they return to their initial dimension, and Rick C-137 tells the other Rick to just go ahead and leave the family behind as he'll be there to take care of them as he tries to find a way back to his own dimension.

Rick and Morty: The Anime is now streaming on Max.

One Piece Creator Left the Show's Staff Pulling Hair Out With His Requests https://comicbook.com/anime/news/one-piece-netflix-season-2-eiichiro-oda-request/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 22:00:00 +0000 Megan Peters 22220883-2160-490c-8f8a-423cc64c07e3

One Piece has been around for nearly 30 years, and in that time, fans have come to know its cast very well. From Luffy to Law, there are lots of pirates to track in One Piece, and that doesn't even mention the lore. No one knows the ins and outs of the series better than its creator Eiichiro Oda. And as the man helps bring Netflix's One Piece together for season two, Oda's requests have put the team to the test.

Recently, Oda updated fans on the status of One Piece now that Netflix has started filming season two. Just as it was with season one, Oda is incredibly involved with the development of this season as he gets the final say on... well, everything. In his new note to fans, Oda said season two has some big updates on the horizon, and they come after his requests left the show's staff pulling their hair out.

"It'll cost! But whether it's the script or the cast, I continue to insist on this or that, which makes Matt [Owens] the showrunner go 'Aaarrgh!' and Netflix go 'Noooo' and Tomorrow Studios go 'Whaaat' as they all pull their hair out," Oda said, unpacking the hard work that is being putting into season two. However, the creator says his notes are far from tyrannical. The entire team behind Netflix's One Piece wants the show to succeed, so they get granular with the details.

"All that, even though we grew so close making season one. But it's because we all share the same passion for this show! Just as with last season, they've gone out of their way to promise that they won't put the show out until I'm satisfied."

Clearly, Netflix's One Piece is putting tons of work into season two. The show is expected to bring these new episodes to life next year, but right now, Oda is keeping his focus on production. Just this week, a slew of new casting announcements for One Piece went live including Katey Sagal (Dr. Kureha) and Sendhil Ramamurthy (Cobra). So before long, One Piece fans will hopefully learn which stars will play Nico Robin and more!

Want to know more about One Piece? No sweat. You can read up on the story's official synopsis below:

"As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer "Red-Haired" Shanks. But Luffy's life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber...at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure...one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary "One Piece," said to be the greatest treasure in the world..."

Naruto Expands Streaming Footprint With New Amazon Deal https://comicbook.com/anime/news/naruto-streaming-new-amazon-deal/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 20:56:00 +0000 Evan Valentine cf360d7a-f413-4b08-a32b-c8b2290ba28a

It's impossible to deny that Naruto will be a significant part of the anime world for quite some time to come. Ever since the boy who harbored the Nine Tail Fox hit the shonen scene, the Hidden Leaf Village has released manga chapters, anime episodes, and feature-length films. Hollywood has also taken notice as a live-action Naruto movie is in the works thanks to Lionsgate and Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of Marvel's Shang Chi And The Legend of The Ten Rings. Amazon has recently announced that it is teaming up with Masashi Kishomoto's legendary franchise and Viz Media to create an entire Naruto channel for free.

Naruto first hit Weekly Shonen Jump in 1999 and has followed the story of the Seventh Hokage for decades. The new deal with Amazon will see the Naruto Channel populated with episodes from both the original Naruto series along with Naruto: Shippuden. At present, the manga is following the story of Naruto's son, Boruto, via Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. While Boruto might not have the Nine-Tailed Fox inside of him, his problems might be far scarier than those of his father.

Naruto x Amazon

Variety broke the news that Naruto was receiving its own Amazon Freevee channel, though details on the channel's start date remain a mystery. Viz Media's Senior Director of Digital Distribution, JP Villaneuva, had the following to say on the Naruto channel that will be a part of Amazon's Freevee, "With the launch of a dedicated linear channel and VOD offerings, fans can now experience the iconic adventures of Naruto Uzumaki around the clock. This addition not only enriches Freevee's anime library but also provides an exciting new way for fans to engage with one of the most celebrated anime franchises,"

On top of the Naruto anime adaptation hitting Freevee, Amazon is also bringing the following series to its free streaming platform, Accel World, "Bakuman, Blue Dragon, Buso Renkin, Captain Tsubasa, Death Note, Infini-T Force, Inuyasha, Inuyasha Final Act, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, K, K: Seven Stories, MEGALOBOX, Ranma 1/2 , Reborn, Sailor Moon Crystal, Terraformars, Vampire Knight, and Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon.

Demon Slayer Cosplay Revisits The Rock Hashira https://comicbook.com/anime/news/demon-slayer-cosplay-rock-hashira-best-anime-girls/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 20:14:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 0e248355-53a2-4bf4-9e8c-6a6242f0ecf4

To The Hashira Training Arc saw Tanjiro and his friends training alongside the Demon Slayer Corps' strongest swordsmen in an effort to prepare themselves for the upcoming Demon Slayer finale. On top of familiar faces such as the Love Hashira, Mist Hashira, and Water Hashira, the Rock Hashira, Gyomei Himejima, not only was given more screen time but viewers were able to learn more about the strongest member of the Corps. Set to play a significant role in the upcoming trilogy of films that will document the Infinity Castle Arc, one Demon Slayer fan has put a new spin on the Rock Hashira via cosplay.

For those who want a refresher on the Rock Hashira, Gyomei originally ran an orphanage where he cared about nothing other than taking care of those who took residence inside his humble abode. Unfortunately, thanks to one orphan striking a deal with a demon to save his own skin, Himejima was taught a horrifying lesson that in this demonic world, no one is safe. Losing all of his orphans save for one, Gyomei discovered just how strong he could truly be but still was wrongly convicted for his orphans' deaths. Saved by the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, Gyomei would go on to become a being that demons feared.

The Rock Hashira Returns

When last we left Gyomei, he was attempting to make sure that the demon lord Muzan was no longer a blight on the land. Unfortunately for the Rock Hashira and his comrades-in-arms, the big bad of the series had a trick up his sleeve as he pulled all the Hashira, along with Tanjiro and his young friends, into the Infinity Castle. Whenever the anime does return, it will do so on the big screen and kick off a series of battles that will end Demon Slayer with a bang.

As of the writing of this article, Demon Slayer's trilogy of films have yet to reveal their release dates. Based on the schedule of previous anime seasons, we might be seeing the anime adaptation continue for several years in the future. Since Demon Slayer's manga ended several years prior, readers know just how big the grand finale will be in the anime if it follows the source material.

Jujutsu Kaisen End Date Sparks New Theories for Gojo's Revival https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jujutsu-kaisen-ending-theory-gojo-alive/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 20:01:00 +0000 Megan Peters 0edfa743-cdbf-4b25-a232-9e8b323e9da9

Jujutsu Kaisen fans are a lively bunch, and arguably, there are few fandoms that match the community when it comes to theories. Since day one, creator Gege Akutami has given readers tons of material to speculate about, and now fans are pushing into overdrive. Next month, Jujutsu Kaisen will come to a close with its final chapter, and the end date alone is sparking theories about the return of Gojo Satoru.

For some context, the team at Shueisha has confirmed Jujutsu Kaisen will end on September 30 in Japan, so stateside readers will get access to the finale on September 29. The manga has just five chapters to go before it is done, so clearly, fans are geeking out. There are lots of loose threads to wrap before Jujutsu Kaisen ends, and some fans are convinced the finale has signaled Gojo's return with its date alone.

After all, Jujutsu Kaisen is set to end next month, and it coincides with a rather big anniversary. What might it be? Well, that would be Gojo's death.

jujutsu-kaisen-gojo.png
(Photo: Shueisha)

At the end of September 2023, the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom was taken aback when chapter 236 dropped and revealed Gojo's death. The strongest sorcerer alive was killed by Sukuna as the pair fought in Shibuya, leaving Gojo's comrades to enact all sorts of backup plans. Since the chapter went live, Gojo has yet to make a peep even though his corpse was controlled by Yuta at one point. After being split in two at the waist, Gojo seemed very dead, but the manga gave us a peek at the afterlife that has yet to be resolved.

After his death, Gojo entered his own afterlife, and it took the shape of an airport. It was there the sorcerer seemed reluctant to leave, and as far as we know, Jujutsu Kaisen has yet to release Gojo's soul. As such, fans are convinced the manga is setting up a last-minute gift for fans. It has the chance to bring Gojo back to life with its final chapter which aligns with the first anniversary of the hero's death.

For now, the future of Gojo is uncertain, and there are plenty other loose ends that Jujutsu Kaisen needs to cut. If you want to keep up with the series moving forward, you can find the manga on Viz Media's Shonen Jump app. So for more info on Jujutsu Kaisen, you can read its official synopsis below:

"For some strange reason, Yuji Itadori, despite his insane athleticism would rather just hang out with the Occult Club. However, her soon finds out that the occult is as real as it gets when his fellow club members are attacked! Meanwhile, the mysterious Megumi Fushiguro is tracking down a special-grade cursed object, and his search leads him to Itadori..."

Pokemon Anime Finds New Streaming Home With 20+ Season Deal https://comicbook.com/anime/news/pokemon-anime-watch-online-streaming/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 19:38:00 +0000 Megan Peters 966452f4-3a16-4042-af87-26fbf666419a

Do you like Pokemon? And are free things always on your radar? If so, then you will want to pay close attention to the Pokemon anime right now. Not long ago, The Pokemon Company International struck a big streaming deal that will collect much of the Pokemon anime online, and the ad-supported initiative will be free to watch.

Yes, that is right. We said free. The Pokemon anime is about to bring 22 seasons to fans for free, and we have WildBrain to thank.

The company, which focuses on family entertainment, has inked a deal to distribute the Pokemon anime. It will be the only FAST (free ad-supported television) distributor of the Pokemon anime in the United States as well as Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

Lara Ilie, a vice president at WildBrain, celebrated the Pokemon deal with a statement reading, "We're thrilled to be bringing Pokemon to FAST audiences as a single-IP channel for the first time ever. FAST is an important component of an omni-channel strategy to grow brands and reach fans everywhere they're watching. As a leader in audience engagement for kids and families, we're looking forward to leveraging our FAST expertise to reach the ever-growing Pokemon community."

According to WildBrain, it has secured 22 seasons of the Pokemon anime. These seasons include fan-favorite stories like The Beginning, Gold and Silver, Ruby and Sapphire, Diamond and Pearl, Black and White, as well as Sun and Moon. This catalog does not include Pokemon movies, and of course, Netflix has its own exclusively licensed titles. In the U.S., Netflix is the home of Pokemon Journeys as well as Pokemon Horizons, so you will have to visit the service there to binge those series.

This latest Pokemon anime announcement is an important one as it will better collect the TV series stateside. In the past, much of the classic Pokemon anime was collated on the Pokemon TV app, but it was shut down more than a year ago. Since then, the streaming rights for Pokemon have been all over the place, and some old-school seasons were just plain unavailable. Now, WildBrain is ready to give that access back to fans, so Pokemon lovers better keep an eye out for Ash Ketchum!

Chainsaw Man Proves Pochita's True Power With a Devastating Tag Team https://comicbook.com/anime/news/chainsaw-man-manga-spoiler-pochita-true-power/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 18:44:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 9685f33e-0bfa-4945-a89f-0912ef2ddcd8

Denji is not in a good place mentally right now and the world is suffering as a result. Thanks to the Japanese Government hurling various devils his way, humanity is losing some key concepts that readers normally take for granted. In an effort to stop Denji's reign of destruction, Chainsaw Man's latest manga chapter is unleashing a group effort to try to smack some sense into the Chainsaw Devil. The recent chapter takes place entirely in silence, despite the heavy action taking place, which is a direct result of what Denji has been up to and why Pochita's true power might be beyond understanding.

Warning. If you have yet to read the latest chapter of Chainsaw Man's manga, Chapter 175, be forewarned that we'll be diving into spoiler territory. The Japanese Government is holding nothing back when it comes to using Denji for their own ends but that fact isn't slowing down the Chainsaw Devil by any stretch of the imagination. As mentioned earlier, Chapter 175 has no dialogue as Denji has seemingly killed the "Mouth Devil". Thanks to this feat, all the mouths in the world have seemingly vanished and everyone is paying the price.

Pochita's True Power

Thanks to seeing Nayuta's decapitated head, Denji is beyond out of control. To take him down, Famine, Katana Man, and Asa The War Devil are all attacking the Chainsaw Devil at once. Shockingly, none of them are even able to make a dent in Denji's armor or come close to stopping Pochita's reign of destruction. Luckily, Mitaka seemingly has a plan up her sleeves, even though her arms have disappeared.

The Japanese Government has a nefarious plan that is taking place in the background, looking to "feed" devils to the Chainsaw Devil. Most specifically, the "Aging Devil" has agreed to be Denji's next victim as the fictional Japan but at a serious price. In an attempt to "evolve" humanity, the government has promised to sacrifice thousands of children to the Aging Devil and prove just how dark Tatsuki Fujimoto's bloody shonen series can be when it wants to.

BoJack Horseman Creator Teams With Netflix on New Animated Comedy https://comicbook.com/anime/news/bojack-horseman-creator-new-show-long-story-short/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 18:14:00 +0000 Megan Peters 454d58ee-01d7-4ecd-aada-bc8011690d7a

It looks like Netflix is gearing up for a brand-new series with Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the creator of BoJack Horseman. Today, reports went live confirming the new deal in the wake of BoJack Horseman's rise at Netflix. Bob-Waksberg is creating a new series titled Long Story Short, and the animated comedy will be a must-watch for fans of his previous work.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Long Story Short is an adult comedy that focuses on a family's journey over time. An official log line has been released for the series, so you can read up on it below:

"It's about the shared history, the inside jokes, the old wounds. If you've ever had a mother, father, sibling, partner, or child, this is the show for you and by the way would it kill you to call them?"

Bob-Waksberg will not only writer the series but act as executive producer and showrun the project. In a statement addressing Long Story Short, the creator said he is happy to be back doing what he loves most.

"It is legitimately a thrill and an honor to be back doing what I love most: drafting enthusiastic pull quotes for press releases to Hollywood trade publications. Who says you can't go home again?!"

As you can imagine, fans of BoJack Horseman are excited to hear about Netflix's new deal with Bob-Waksberg. The creator imbued BoJack Horseman with its signature wit, so the expectations for Long Story Short are high. The new series was also announced at the perfect time. BoJack Horseman premiered exactly a decade ago today, so emotions must be running high for Bob-Waksberg. With a new series in production, the writer will be able to revisit fans soon enough, so here's to hoping Netflix is able to streamline the animated comedy.

If you have not experienced the joy of BoJack Horseman, well - better late than never. The hit comedy can be found on Netflix now, so for more info on the series, you can read its official synopsis below:

"Set in a Los Angeles in which humans and anthropomorphic animal-people coexist, BoJack Horseman is an animated show about one man (who is also a horse) who peaked early and is trying to figure out what to do with his life now. An outrageous and dark comedy with a melancholy center, the show asks the question, "what happens when you have the world at your fingertips and you still can't figure out how to be happy?""

Yu Yu Hakusho Is Selling Toguro's Iconic Shades IRL https://comicbook.com/anime/news/yu-yu-hakusho-toguro-iconic-shades-buy/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 17:59:00 +0000 Evan Valentine 53e6a20b-e14e-4bbf-9a4e-baf871cf5bef

Yu Yu Hakusho might have released its final chapter in 1994 but the legacy that the supernatural shonen series continues to this day. Most recently, Yusuke Urameshi and his fellow spirit detectives returned via a live-action adaptation that Netflix aired, smashing together the initial arc of the property along with the "Dark Tournament Arc". During the underworld tournament, Yusuke was on a collision course with arguably the most recognizable villain of the franchise, Toguro. Aside from his giant muscles and ruthless demeanor, Toguro's glasses helped him stand out amongst anime villains and now, you can pick up the shades for yourself.

If you're unfamiliar with the larger-than-life villain, he wasn't always the evil behemoth that anime fans came to know. About fifty years before Yu Yu Hakusho's story began, Toguro was more than friends with Yusuke's mentor, Genkai. Unfortunately for the future villain, a number of his allies were taken out by a demon that he swore to destroy. Entering the Dark Tournament himself, Toguro would claim victory while also claiming revenge against the demon that had wronged him. Warped by the experience, Toguru would become a demon and would eventually be on a collision course with Yusuke Urameshi and his former ally Genkai.

Toguro's Shades Are Up For Sale

Meccha Japan revealed that they would be selling the patented glasses that helped Toguro to stand out amongst the villains of anime. While not immediately available, the glasses will be made available in January of next year and will retail for around $80 USD. Of course, the glasses will not give its users any demonic powers comparable to the younger Toguro brother.

The recent live-action Yu Yu Hakusho had a Toguro that looked like the spitting image of his anime counterpart. Played by actor Go Ayano, the series shortened the story of the Toguro brothers but still captured the menace of the demonic siblings. At present, Netflix hasn't confirmed if Yu Yu Hakusho will receive a second season, though Chapter Black and the Three Kings Saga would possibly make for good stories for the live-action series to adapt.

Webtoon Publisher Naver Seeks Legal Action Against 160+ Piracy Sites https://comicbook.com/anime/news/manga-webtoon-piracy-kakao-lawsuit/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 17:47:00 +0000 Megan Peters f56822b5-af8c-490d-9fc2-a1ded95232c8

The company behind Webtoon is ready to take legal action against some of its top pirates. For decades, piracy lanes have targeted the manga industry, and it didn't take long for those branches to embrace webtoon. From South Korea to China and Japan, web comics have been a huge hit, and Naver has investing in the field. And after Webtoon Entertainment went public at the stock market, Naver is now preparing to take legal action against 170+ piracy sites across the globe.

As reported by a recent SEC filing, Naver and Webtoon Entertainment is looking into piracy very closely as stock prices have fallen sharply in recent weeks. You can read what the company's filing stated about the situation below:

"As the copying and distribution of content over the internet proliferates, the risk of piracy, gray market sales, illegal downloading, file-sharing or other infringement, misappropriation and other violation of our intellectual property is likely to continue to increase... We take various measures to prevent and monitor unauthorized use of our content, including developing proprietary technology to detect piracy and other technological measures."

With this SEC filing complete, Webtoon Entertainment is now interested in sourcing info on the piracy sites that are trawling its titles. A DCMS subpoena was filed by the company in Texas earlier this week asking for Cloudfare to hand over the personal details for owners overseeing a number of piracy sites. In this DCMA subpoena, 170 unique domains are listed including some of the top-visited piracy sites for manga and webtoons stateside.

"The purpose of the accompanying subpoena is to obtain the identity of the alleged copyright infringer(s) in control of the internet domain(s)/website(s) listed in the subpoena. The information obtained will be used only for the purpose of protecting the rights granted to my client," the subpoena's declaration reads.

At this point, no word is available on this subpoena will play out, and there is no telling how Cloudfare's information may impact the accused piracy platforms. Last November, Webtoon said its action against piracy sites forced "about 150" services to shut down. But of course, the question now is whether other piracy services popped up to replace those that Naver Webtoon helped dismantle.
